Introduction Breif Discussion Why has VOIP Deployment been so slow? Internet telephony Major elements of VoIP Basic functionality How VoIP call is established Software requirement Set up Advantages using VoIP over PSTN VoIP features Conclusion

Past : More than 30 years ago Internet didn't exist. Interactive communications were only made by telephone at PSTN line cost Data exchange was expansive Yesterday : Few years ago we saw appearing some interesting things: PCs to large masses, new technologies to communicate like cellular phones and finally the great net: Internet. Today : Today we can see a real revolution in communication world: everybody exchange data and, sometimes, to talk each other using applications like Net meeting or Internet Phone begins to use PCs and Internet for job and free time to communicate each other.

VoIP stands for 'V'oice 'o'ver 'I'nternet 'P'rotocol. VoIP tries to let go voice (mainly human) through

IP packets and, in definitive through Internet.

VoIP can use accelerating hardware to achieve this

purpose and can also be used in a PC environment.

VoIP is the traspotation of packets containing voice

data over LAN,WAN or INTERNET. Today eneterprise see VoIP as much larger communication sol. SIP(session initiation protocol)s upports voice, fax & instant messaging. Deployment features include: Broadband & internet communication

Takes extra bytes for voice packets. Difficulty in providing low enough delay & high

reliability.
There must be connections between current voice n/w

and voip.

Before sending a signal we have to digitalize it with an

ADC - transmit it, and transform it again in analog format with DAC.
VoIP digitalizes voice in data packets, sending them and

reconverting them in voice at destination.

It uses internet to send voice from one end of world to

another. Saves 95% in expenses on calls. PC to PC call free. 4 ways of Internet phone call : a) Computer to Computer call b) Computer to Phone call c) Telephone to Telephone call d) International call back.

Converts analog voice signal to digital Compresses

&translates into IP packets for transmission.

Brings convergence between data 13 and voice n/w.

Reconstructs analog voice from digitized data stream.

It digitizes the voice. Can be viewed as modem having dual functionality.

Various voice codes used are:PCM & ADPCM

Hence voice can be compressed with number of

different compressers called CODEC.

Gateway is a hardware and software that provides a

connection from a soft switch. Receives/sends the call control instruction needed through stream control Tx protocol(SCTP).

Soft switches:
Its a call agent, a software that provides call control and

signalling. Ensuers that call is routed through the n/w to proper destination. Supports multiprotocol , media independence.

IP phones makes data connections to IP telephony

servers which does the call setup processing.

A computer can also play the role of IP phone with a

handset and microphone plugged in.

Computers CPU runs the software doing the software

processing.

VoIP works like that, digitaizing voice in data pakets, sending them & reconverting them them in voice at destination. For long distance: Your phone VoIP service providers server VoIP server of area which calling via internetphone via server

Digitalized voice is extracted from IP packet then

decompressed using CODEC ,then converted to analog signal. Gateway is physically connected to both networks. On one side a physically phone line connects the gateway to PSTN where it can communicate with any telephone in world. On other side ,the gateway is physically connected to internet whereby it can communicate with any computer in the world.

At PSTN line more time you stay on line ,more you pay

In PSTN ,when on line you couldnt talk with other

that one person at time. In contrast to it, in VoIP you can talk any number of persons at time. In VoIP you can also transfer data(images, graphs, video) with person you are talking with but this cant be done in PSTN.

25

Felxibility

You can make call from anywhere you have broadband connectivity. Price much lower than general telephone connection .It is based on type of broadband connection you take from service provider. FacilitiesWith VOIP we can also check voicemail via web.

we can try to imagine it with many computers, Internet

almost everywhere at high speed and people talking (audio and video) in a real time fashion. We only need to know what will be the means to do this: UMTS, VoIP (with video extension) or other? Anyway we can notice that Internet has grown very much in the last years, and could be the right communication media for future.
