Problems

Formulation of Problem
Marble
Marble is a metamorphic stone formed when limestone is subjected to intense heat, pressure and chemical solutions.

The effect of intense heat is the creation of a stone with a

very tight crystalline structure and small but definite porosity. Due to its structure, marble can be polished to improve its shine and is thus a common and attractive stone for building applications. The most common dimensions of Marble on the market are follow as : Blocks (8ft x 5ft x 5ft) Slabs (8ft x 5ft with thickness of 2-3 cm)

Marble vs Ceramic
Marble Ceramic

Difficult to remove strains

Natural colors and patterns Expensive Easily scratched

Easy to remove strains

More varied colors and patterns Cheaper Scratched-resistant

Need extra maintenance

Need cleaner that required for marble and periodic polishing

Easy maintenance
Can be easily with a sponge/mop

Formulation of Problem
Marbles Deterioration
Weathering
The natural forces and agents of weather may have a degrading effect on the appearance and structural of marble.

Erosion
It is the wearing away of the surface, edges, corners or carved details of the stone over time, giving the stone an overall granular texture It is typically caused by the natural action of wind and the particles wind carries or water

Cracking
Cracks may result from a variety of causes including the use of mortar that is too hard, the corrosion of internal ferrous iron pins or reinforcements and structural issues such as settlement
NATURAL & CHEMICAL PRODUCT DESIGN MARBLE CLEANSER CHEMICAL ENGINEERING | FACULTY OF ENGINEERING | UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA

Formulation of Problem
Marbles Deterioration
Salts
When salt crystallize within the pores of the stone, stresses may be created that can fragment the marble.

Biological
As biological grow, they can exert pressure on the mineral grains, weakening the inter-granular structure.
NATURAL & CHEMICAL PRODUCT DESIGN MARBLE CLEANSER CHEMICAL ENGINEERING | FACULTY OF ENGINEERING | UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA

Formulation of Problem
Marble Cleaner
Marble surfaces need extra attention, especially to clean the marble. Marble cleaner is used to clean the marble from dirt. Because marble physical properties are different with ceramic, so do the marble cleaner composition.

Marble Cleaner Composition

The following compositions that should not be contained in marble cleaners :
These substances These substances can directly react doesnt react Marble can be with marble so can immediately. scratched damage the marble However, the marble Example : Silica becomes porous. Contoh : vinegar, HCl Example : bleacher, chlorine

Abrasive Substances

Strong dye
Marble can absorb easily into the pores of marble and its difficult to remove

DETERMING NEEDS
In order to get consumers needs, we make a questionnaire consists of

several question related to marble cleaner product. Beside using

questionnaire, we also interview the consumers directly to get their opinion about existing marble cleaner, its weaknesses, how consumers want the product to be, etc. the results of the questionnaire and the interview are combined and showed as below:

How-To-Use Smearing the gel on the surface of the marble, wait a few minutes, then scrub with a brush and mopped with water. Tablet marble cleanser will be thrown on the surface of the marble, then the change in pressure in the tablet and then will explode and turn into a gas phase. Working Principle Gel marble cleanser containing soap that can remove dirt and clean the marble. The scrubing process will help release the dirt. Gel marble cleanser also contains lavender extracts that can produce pleasant fragrance of the marble.

Concept Screening
Based on the previous chapter, we reduce fifteen concepts into fewer concepts but feasible to manufacture. We have discussed that there are eleven new concepts that feasible to manufacture. In this chapter, we need to reduce some of eleven concepts into fewer concepts by doing concept screening and concept scoring. Concept screening is a quickly and qualitatively selection concepts system. Concept screening is a comparison system between the required specifications with the purpose of manufacturing the product.

The best eleven best concepts are shown in the table 6.1 as follows:

Selected Concept
Concept I has a score of 3.9 for cleanser meets the required criteria. This concept is more powerful and

more fragrance. In this concept the form of the cleanser is gel. It is means the viscosity is relatively high.
The concentration of the cleanser is high too so that the cleanser has a powerful smell of odor. This form is more innovative than the liquid form of cleanser so that people will interested in buying it. We want to

produce the gel form of cleanser that has 0-1 rival. The downside of this concept is the amount of usage.
The amount of usage of gel is really high than the other concept. Because the usage is high, the cost is high too.
