educate, support & empower Background Two breast cancer survivors, one from Malaysia and the other from USA, initiate the idea of adapting and translating selected educational materials into Bahasa Melayu as one of the ways in providing the much needed information on breast cancer treatment and care in Malaysia. Their effort evolved into a major educational activity; Cancer Resource, Education & Support (CaEd). Leadership for this program is being provided cooperatively by the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Cornell University. CaEd was formally launched in Malaysia in September 2003. Now CaEd is known as CaRE.

Aspiration To be the frontier leader for cancer education in Malaysia. Goals To develop & provide evidence based cancer information, education & support to Malaysians affected by cancer To develop human and institutional capacity to sustain the above effort

CaRE: THE ROLE (in Malay)


Satu pusat penyediaan maklumat, pendidikan dan sokongan kanser, CaRE memberikan kesedaran awal melalui pelbagai program dan sokongan yang disediakan sepanjang tahun kerana sistem pangkalan datanya memberikan maklumat kepada komuniti tentang perkhidmatan kanser setempat seperti 1. bahan pendidikan kanser, 2. bilik sumber rujukan kanser, 3. program rakan sebaya oleh Kanwork, 4. Program pendidikan kanser, 5. program kaunseling yang dilaksanakan oleh professional kaunselor, 6. maklumat kanser secara online, 7. direktori sumber kanser dan perkhidmatan

CaRE adalah pusat dimana Cancer Information, Education & Support (CiES) diaplikasikan.

CaRE: Analysis of Role


Cancer Research base initiative - cancer education,

food dietary, treatment education, body care education and other health aspect. Emphasizing on MORE to women. Aspiration to become resource center in Cancer Education and Research (CaEd). Open to cancer patients, survivors, their family and individual/organization with interest to help the needy.

Vission To ensure that individual and their families, who are living with, through and beyond cancer will not journey it alone, and that their healing needs will be met. Mission To empower individuals and their families battling with cancer with information that helps them make decisions and to provide them with emotional and spiritual support.

KanWork: OBJECTIVES
To perform as a resource center and education for cancer patients, their

families, society and any related bodies To facilitate support system for breast cancer patients and their families To build leadership amongst group support system for cancer patients and their families To initiate relationship and cooperation with individuals, groups and institutions which have the same function in educating cancer patients, their families and societies To stimulate support effort for prevention, early detection, and breast cancer treatment To provide programs and services about breast cancer to community To stimulate educational activities to those who provide health care and volunteers who work for cancer patients, their families and cancer survivors.

KanWork: SCOPE
Provide psychological, emotional and spiritual support to cancer

patients and families. Provide information and education on better disease management and coping strategies for cancer patients and survivors and their families, Promote cancer awareness and prevention among the public. Develop leadership for support group system. Promote recreational activities and health fitness programs. Promote publication of educational material in local languages to reach wider segment of the population. Promote related research for better disease treatment and management. Support efforts on cancer related issues. Link and collaborate with both local and foreign individuals, groups and institutions of common interests. Other related activities.

To establish any extension education program, we need..
Location: strategic & easy accessible to the needy. Infrastructure: fully equip facilities with material & ext.

edu. resources, with regards to suits their conditions. Target Group: Peoples, Clients, Patients, or Trainers. Educator Personnel: Multitask extensionist, teachers, experts in-house, motivator & demonstrators. Programmes: Event calender, Must Attractive, evidence focused, & outcome oriented. Proper Funding: Independent sponsors/Private CSR/ Government/ any HALAL sources from local or abroad. Promotional: Unconditional supporters, tv, videos, mass media, event series, active internet webpage, blogspot, skype, twitter, youtube & facebook. Muhammad Hafidz Abdul Raman

OBSERVATION: THE CANCER PATIENTS


They experienced it. They positively minded. They developed self belonging. They high in spiritual thought and cherish GOD more often. They established group, peer support group & own community. They like sharing and caring between each other. They allow volunteer personnel to help them. There are no superiority & work position mentioned. They are friendly too. They have changed with time and their surrounding. They have gone through the process of change.

The CaRE act as


A middleman between patients, doctors and hospital.

Facilitate change to the patient.


Help patient to change & develop their courage to fight

cancer. Give information & provide easy excess to cancer educational materials. As tool for patient community to meet and share. Shorten gap by providing ethics language translation of cancer educational materials and make it available to all ethnics in Malaysia.

EXTENSION IN CaRE
Medical Information Extension - known as the

application of medical scientific research and new knowledge transfer for recipient to practices through cancer education materials. Extension - The dissemination of relevant information and advice to the needy (cancer patients). The field of extension now encompasses a wider range of communication and learning activities organized for cancer people by professionals from different medical and allied disciplines, including healthcare, food dietary and medical guide. Extension practitioners here is working with government agencies as management officials, lecturers, students and volunteer.
