ADVERBIAL CLAUSES OF TIME

There are many different types of adverbial clauses, such as clauses of purpose, manner, condition, and result. All of these give further information about the verb of the main clause. In addition to the expressions taught in this lesson, time clauses can also begin with while, as, since, once, by the time, and until.

MAIN CLAUSE

ADVERBIAL CLAUSE

They ran out of the house The ambulance will come She buys DVDs I finished my project Jack called his mother

when they saw the fire. as soon as possible. whenever she has extra money. before I went home. after he ate dinner.

An adverb modifies the verb. An Adverbial clause gives more information about the main verb of the sentence. An adverbial clause of time answers the question When? The adverbial clause could come before or after the main clause. If the adverbial clause comes before the main clause, it is followed by a comma. I finished my project before I went home. Before I went home, I finished my project.
