chemical formula (except steam). Depending on your entry more information may be required.
Clearly defined liquids and gases like oxygen, nitrogen, pure water or ethanol do not
require further entries. All necessary information about these data are easily accessible in the
relevant literature.
Mixtures (e.g. natural gas) or brand names (e.g. Shell motor oil) do not provide sufficient
information for the calculation. More information is required.

Density: The density is an essential input value of the flow calculation. This field must be
completed in case of mixtures and brand names.
The influence of the viscosity value on the calculation is normally very small and negligible.
The Reynolds No. is a function of the viscosity. This may be a limiting factor for the
measurement especially with highly viscous liquids.

Rel. humidity in a pure gas means to have a mixture of the mentioned gas and water
vapour. The density of the mixture depends on the absolute amount of water in the gas, which
is a function of the relative humidity and the temperature. In most cases the influence is small.
E.G.: 70% rel humidity @ 86F equals a water vapour pressure of 12H2O. The normal
density of air will drop 1,278 kg/Nm (dry air 1,293kg/Nm)
Mixing up reference conditions is a frequent source of mistakes.
The unit entered for the density must match the selection of the reference condtions.

1. Gases usually do have very low viscosity values. The risk of being limited by the Reynolds-
No. is quite low.
2. The Compressibility factor does have an influence on the density especially at high
pressure. If the density is given at normal or standard conditions this may have a quite big
impact on the calculation result. If this value is not available the calculation will be done
with the factor set to 1 or in case of clear defined mixtures with a factor estimated from
the ingredients.
3. The influence of the specific heat ratio on the calculation is small and usually negligible.
4. Very often customers are not able to provide these values.

1. The calculation can only be done for one single process condition (operating condition).
2. Changing process conditions must be compensated using a flow computer
3. The minimum flow rate is mainly depending on the resulting dp and the Reynolds No.
A typical measurement dynamic (Turndown) is 6:1. TDs > 12:1 require split range
configurations with more than one dP-transmitter.
4. Dont forget to clearly mark if the pressure values are relative or absolute.
5. The maximum process pressure/temperature will not be taken into account for the
application but is important for the correct selection of the pressure rating. PCM will not
check the selected pressure rating (order code) according to entries in these fields.

Why is the internal diameter so important?
Orifice:
The relevant standards do not allow sudden diameter changes within the
straight inlet and outlet lengths.
According to ISO5167/VDI2040 the pipe diameter enlargement (or
contraction) has to be done with a cone angle < 8 in a distance of at least 2D
(D= internal diameter) upstream and downstream.






Deviation- and uncertainty calculations (similar to E+H Prowirl) are not
allowed.
The calculation is based on the exact internal diameter. Wrong dimensions
will cause huge errors.
