Judiciary Act of 1801 John Marshall appointed by John Adams, strong Federalist, kept Federalism alive for almost 30 years Marbury v. Madison 1803 established judicial review, gave that right to the Supreme Court alone, took that power away from other branches, attempted to impeach Samuel Chase, was denied, never been an issue again
Louisiana Purchase
Napoleon negotiated with Spain to get the Louisiana Territory, west of the Mississippi River, for France Jefferson was negotiating to get N. Orleans for $10 Million, concerned with French takeover Napoleon shocked America and offered all of Louisiana for $15 Million (1803) Why ? Problems in Santo Domingo, afraid he would have to use Louisiana as a gift Jefferson felt torn, but decided to jump on it before Napoleon changed his mind Lewis & Clark-1804 explored from St. Louis up the Missouri River eventually getting to the Pacific Ocean via the Columbia R. Zebulon Pike- Pikes Peak in Colorado 1805
Burr upset with Jefferson, proposed succession, Hamilton exposed the plot Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel and killed him Burr spent the rest of his life running and dreaming up ridicilous plots
Britain issued the Orders in Council in 1806, closed French ports to foreign shipping Impressment, forcible take over of sailors was a common British tactic Chesapeake Affair in 1807, British demanded soldiers off the American ship, ended up killing three Americans Jefferson issued the Embargo Act in 1807, did not trade with either or anyone else hurt the Americans Embargo Act replaced with Non-Intercourse Act in 1809, opened with other countries except Britain or France Macons Bill #2 in 1810- stated that we would trade with all countries but if either country stopped their restriction we would have an embargo on either Britain or France, the ball is in their court France half-heartedly gave in, Madison gave in, but Britain never followed suit
