Health care

Tele-medicine
The future presents opportunities for technology to meet the crucial needs of society, health being one of the them. Tele-medicine has been identified as one of the ways health care can be improved among underserved communities who have limited access to proper health care.
Tele-medicine is the use of communication and information technologies for delivery of clinical care through the phone or Internet with the purpose of consulting for remote medical procedures or examinations.

How it works

Doctor in an urban setting

Tele-medicine equipment provider

Internet connection provider

Clinic in underserved location

The healthcare industry in Kenya has begun to move from isolated pilot programs to more widespread use of telemedicine. The technology is cheaper and easier to use hence making the services deployed to be provided to people in underserved areas at a minimum cost.

Benefit to communities
Some of the areas the project focuses on range from: Child and Maternal health care Children with paraplegic conditions Emergency cases Child birth

Patients receive specialized treatment from qualified doctors. This project will improve the livelihoods of the people living in underserved areas. This project will empower the people living in these communities and encourage them to seek medical attention when ill.

Further Development
This project should be developed further because: Improved health among communities improves the economy of any societal group This project assists in early detection of illness and will end up saving lives Our leaders have an obligation to ensure many of the bureaucratic barriers that hinder telemedicine's spread such as taxation of medical equipment by national and county governments is waived.

Sustainability
The underserved sites are able to raise funds through: Consultation fee charges with every visit to the clinic Getting partners on board to further improve the health package offering to the community In the long run the project is able to employ local clinicians and improve the well being of the community.

The future in e-health

The future of healthcare will become even more inclusive as the penetration of broadband and internet coverage becomes more ubiquitous. The world of telemedicine, or more broadly Telehealth, will continue to advance. As technology advances, we will see an uptake of patient doctor interaction via video calls using mobile phones.

e-learning

Community Knowledge Centres

Community Knowledge Centres were formed to improve the literacy level of Kenyans and empower communities. Community Knowledge Centres commonly know as CKCs are e-learning centres that present the following opportunities for communities they operate in.

The opportunities Improves access to education, training and learning opportunities for young girls and women Improves access to regional and international markets for women and youth in business Improves healthcare in counties through supporting online training of community healthcare workers through the CKCs

Success Stories
SEKENANI AND MUGAMBO
CKCs at Sekenani in the Mara and Mugambo in Meru are the flagship centres that have successfully embraced technology and improved the lives of the communities around them.

Sekenani
The CKC aims to empower the Mara community to access information and communication technology. A Maasai Moran managed to learn a foreign language through online tutorials at the CKC. He is now an efficient translator to the many tourists who visit the Mara annually.

Mugambo
Mugambo Community knowledge centre was formed to assist the Meru community. The CKC has enabled the community in conducting business and creating market for their produce.

Tele-presence in Universities
Technology is important in todays world of teaching. Teaching demands that lessons extend beyond physical facilities to reach students and educators across the world. Currently 6 universities enjoy Tele-presence solutions in Kenya. By continually pushing the boundaries of using technology to enable next generation learning. The following will be achieved: Providing access to content and experts anywhere, anytime; Bring together multicultural students; Improve administration and staff productivity; Integrate course lectures and live content with learning management systems; Increase professional development.

Project Investment
Empowerment of girls and women through education to empower communities. There are more than 10 CKCs spread across the country. This number is set to increase in the coming years with the advent of the county government.

Sustainability
The future looks promising for this project. The CKCs easily raise funds from the communities by charging a subsidised fee to use the computer facilities.

The future in elearning

E-learning engages the students with visuals and easier ways of understanding concepts. The future of e-learning will involve content creation and availing the content to schools and teachers across the country
