What is a dictionary?
A reference book that contains words which are arranged in alphabetical order gives information about word meaning, pronunciation, etymology and uses

Purposes
Find the meaning of words Check spelling Pronounce (say) words correctly

Types of dictionary

Bilingual dictionary
gives words in two languages provides translations of the English word/ original

Monolingual dictionary uses the same language for the meaning/ explanation

An etymological dictionary
traces a words development over time gives examples to show how a word has changed over time On-line etymological dictionary

Bilingual Dictionaries
Bilingual dictionary is an essential tool for second language learners, but using them correctly requires more than just looking up a word in one language and picking the first translation.

How to searching for an entry in a dictionary


The words are organized in alphabetical order
The words organized in together alphabetical order. Words start with are A are grouped ; words start with B are grouped together, and so on. Look at the first letter example: apple, cat If words start with the same letter, look at the second letter example: sing, slide If the two letters are the same, look at the third letter, and so on. example: chair, change
