Process of removing mineral salts from water by using
the ion exchange process
A typical DM plant consists of cation, degasser and
anion exchangers.
Mineral ions such as cations of sodium, calcium, iron,
copper, etc. and anions such as chloride, sulphate,
nitrate, etc. are common ions present in water.
Demineralized water also known as Deionized water,
water that has had its mineral ions removed.
A power station is an industrial facility for the
generation of electric power
A power plant house consists of Boiler, Turbine,
Condenser or Heat exchanger or Cooling Tower and
Water feed pump.
This is a water tube type of boiler in which water
circulates in tubes heated externally by the fire.
Fuel is burned inside the furnace, creating hot gases
which heats water in the steam-generating tubes.
The heated water then rises into the steam drum.

A steam turbine is a device that extracts thermal
energy from pressurized steam and uses it to do
mechanical work on a rotating output shaft of a
turbine.

An air compressor is a device that converts power
usually from an electric motor, a diesel engine or a
gasoline engine into kinetic energy by compressing
and pressurizing air, which, on command, can be
released in quick bursts.

TYPES OF AIR COMPRESSORS
Reciprocating compressor
Rotary screw compressor

A reciprocating compressor or piston compressor is
a positive-displacement compressor that
uses pistons driven by a crankshaft to deliver gases at high
pressure.

Cooling towers are used to remove excess heat that is
generated in places such as power stations
The condensation process happens in a heat
exchanger.
A rotary screw compressor is a type of gas
compressor which uses a rotary type positive displacement
mechanism.

Air filter
Driven motor
Air compression tank
Radiator
Radiator fan

PROJECT NAME:- Determination of efficiency of
Power Plant House and methods to increase the
efficiency of Power Plant House.
The power Plant House is working on Rankine Cycle.
Rankine cycle is not a theoretical cycle. It is Real in
actual and is used in power plant houses or we can say
that in Thermal Power Plants.

There are four processes in the Rankine cycle:
Constant pressure heat addition in boiler
Work produce by Turbine
Constant Pressure Heat Rejection in Condenser
Work consume by Pump.
Pump work is calculated as
Wp = (h2 h1) KJ/ Kg = V1 (P2 P1)
Heat addition = ( h3 h2 ) KJ/ Kg
Work produce by turbine = ( h3- h4 ) KJ/ Kg
Heat rejected in the Condenser = (h4 h1) KJ/Kg

Efficiency of the simple Rankine Cycle:
The Efficiency of the simple Rankine Cycle can be
defined as:

Regenerator is used to increase the efficiency of the
power plant house.
Mean temperature of heat addition can be increased
by increasing the degree of superheat or raising the
pressure of heat addition.
The processes of the regenerative Rankine cycle are following:

Work done by the turbine = 1(h5 h8)+ (1-M) (h8 h9)

Work done on the pump = (1-M) (h2 h1) + 1 (h4 h6)

Constant pressure heat addition = 1 (h5 h 4)

Constant pressure heat rejection = (1-M) ( h9 h1)

Heat Balance for regenerator:
M* h8 + (1 M) h2 = 1 * h3

Where M = mass flow rate of steam which is given to the heat pump
1 M = mass flow rate of steam which is remaining after expansion in turbine

Where M = mass flow rate of steam which is given to
the heat pump
1 M = mass flow rate of steam which is remaining
after expansion in turbine

Conclusion: As Per the calculations, we can say that
the efficiency of Regenerative Rankine Cycle is always
Greater than simple Rankine Cycle.

PROJECT NAME: - Detection and Prevention of
vibrations produced in Water Feed Pumps
PROJECT NATURE: - Precision Maintenance
Technique
SUMMERY OF THE PROJECT TO BE DONE:-
Precision alignment of pump / motor done using dial
gauge, setting radial and axial alignment, after doing
through alignment of coupling the above said pump
motor vibration is removed.
Types of water feed pump:-
1) Vertical water feed pump 2) Horizontal water feed
pump

CAUSES OF VIBRATION:-
The causes of vibration can be divided into 3 broad
categories:
Misapplication, design, or manufacture caused.
Internally-caused
Externally-caused
Critical speed issues:-
In vertical pumps such as vertical turbines with a variety of
lengths and heads, critical speeds should be considered
prior to manufacture
Severe cavitation:- When cavitation is severe enough the
energy of the implosion may cause the entire unit to vibrate
excessively.

INTERNALLY-CAUSED
Misalignment of the pump and motor :- This is
arguably, the most common cause of vibration in
pumps. It should be noted, alignment to the pump
manufacturers recommendations is critical.

Bent shaft: - A bent shaft may be caused by a number
of field related issues and will result in vibration

Pipe strain:- Pipe strain is arguably the number one
cause, and should be of primary focus in the
investigation of vibration issues. The weight of the
water may be considerable, and pipes which seemed
properly supported when empty are found to need
adjustment when full.

Poor foundation or anchoring:
If the pumps foundation is not flat or the base plate
not properly secured or grouted, vibration may and
will likely result.

EFFECTS OF MISALIGNMENT: -
Shaft misalignment occurs when the centerlines of two
(or more) rotating shaft are not precisely co-axial.
Shaft misalignment can be classified by three different
ways.
Parallel Misalignment occurs when two centerlines of
shafts are parallel but not intersect at the power
transfer points.
Angular Misalignment occurs when two centerlines
of shafts intersect at power transfer points but are not
parallel.
A combination of both types of misalignment
BENEFITS OF ALIGNMENT:-
Improvements in vibration levels,
Reduced mean time between failures
Reduced maintenance costs

TYPES OF MISALIGNMENT:-
Angular misalignment
Offset or parallel misalignment
Combination misalignment

The complete process may be considered as a three
part exercise;
Pre-Alignment
Rough In Alignment
Precision Alignment
Following are pre-alignment process.
Set up error check.
Bent Shaft or coupling check.
Uneven machine leg corrections.

At this stage the centerlines of the machines are
brought into close proximity. There are no set rules for
this but as a general guide line they should be within
1mm offset at the coupling and 1mm/100mm angularity
vertically and horizontally
The alignment methods available at this stage include;
Rim and Face Dial Indicator
Reverse Dial Indicator
Laser

Rim and face dial indicator
Reverse dial indicator
Excessive vibration is easily noted and causes much
difficulty. It is important to determine the root cause of
vibration, so that it can be properly corrected. Since the
majority of vibration-causing problems are external or
alignment issues, those should be of primary focus of
investigation to as- sure long life and lower life cycle costs.
The quality alignment is not dependent on the type of
measurement system used. It depends upon alignment
technique, which locates potential problems and quantify
whether the problem must first be addressed in order to be
able to successfully complete the alignment job. Shaft
misalignment affects the life of rotating parts of machine.
