Check rotation of shaft is free by hand. Check Lube oil level in Bearing Housings are O.K. are not. Check barrier fluid level in Seal pots. Check seal pot vents are lined up to flare or not as per design. Check Cooling water supply and return line up to bearing house, seal pots and ensure their flow. Ensure pump CBD drains are blinded. Line up suction valve and prime the pump by venting the casing to CBD or Flare. Close the vent of the casing and open the warm up valve if its is a hot pump. Check the direction of rotation by kick starting the motor. Start the Motor, once the starting torque amps come down in the ammeter then open the discharge valve slowly observing the amperage in constant contact with DCS operator. Once the flow is established Check for any abnormal sound or vibration in pump & motor.
Regular Checks for Pumps During regular field rounds following are to be checked in Pumps. Any kind abnormal sound coming from pump or motor to be observed. Motor amperage to be checked with respect to FLC. Bearing Housing Lube Oil Level and seal pot barrier fluid level are to be checked in their respective L.Gs and if required to be topped up. Seal pots pressure gauge readings are to be checked for any seal leakage. Cooling water flow to bearing house, pump pedestal, primary seal flushing liquid coolers and seal pot coolers are to be checked in their respective View Glasses. Motor bearings, pump bearings & seal flushing lines downstream of the coolers are to be touched and any abnormality to be noted. Any kind vibration other than normal to be noted. Suction, discharge pressure gauge and ammeter and any other readings as per log sheet are to be noted and deviations are to be reported to the shift-in-charge. Any kind of leak from pump seal, gland leaks from suction and discharge valves to be checked. Any kind of abnormality to be noted in the log book and to be brought to the notice of shift- in-charge immediately.
Steam Turbine driven Pump Start-up Lube oil level in the bearing house and cooling water flow to bearing to be checked and ensured. Turbine I/L steam line to be warmed up by draining condensate though trap bypass by crack opening the Inlet Block Valve . Turbine I/L shutdown valve bypass to be opened and condensate to be drained from casing and O/L line drain (U/S of NRV) so that turbine and O/L line are warmed up and outlet valve fully open. During the above process the governor to be reset to allow steam to casing. To start turbine Open the shut down valve in steam inlet, then slowly open the Block valve and increase the turbine speed so that governor can take up the speed rise without any chattering. Once turbine Speed is normal open the pump discharge valve and adjust the flow and pressure. Shut Down While stopping the turbine close the steam inlet valve first and out let valve after keep the casing drain open. Then the pump discharge to be closed. During emergency the shutdown valve in steam inlet will trip leading to the stoppage of turbine and pump.
