Therapy helps students to deal with their problems.
Give relevant examples.
WHO IS THE FOUNDER?
Allbert Ellis (1913) received M.A and
Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology
from Columbia University and went
on to practice in the areas of
marriage and family therapy.

In 1962 Ellis published Reason and
Emotion in Psychotherapy.
Initially, he founded a theory which
called rational emotive therapy (RET).
Ellis changed the name of the theory
in 1993 to Rational Emotional
Behaviour Therapy (REBT).

BACKGROUND ABOUT REBT

acknowledge the
interrelationship between
thoughts, feelings and
behaviour in human
functioning.
KEY FEATURES IN REBT
REBT pays important role of cognitions on emotion.
REBT contends that people can be best understood
in terms of the nature their self-talk (internal
cognitive dialogue).
Ellis relates the role of cognition and how irrational
thoughts can create self-defeating, emotionally
disturbing outcomes.

Restructuring restructuring irrational thought using
ABCDE.
Redefining- a negative into a more positive thought.
Referenting-helping the student conceptualize problem in
a holistic rather than fragmented perspective.

Shame-attacking exercise client learns to overcome
shame, less concerned about what others think about
him/her
EMOTIVE

STRENGTH AND WEAKNESSES OF REBT
Simplicity- help client to
gain control over their
mental health.
It is easy to be apply to
wide range of client.
Oversimplified- the
step as in ABCD is not
enough to restructure
cognition.
REBT might be
unprivileged for a
client who are not
capable of engaging in
cognitively oriented
process. e.g mental
problem.
