Poxvirus

► Family includes:
► Smallpox virus (Variola virus)
► Vaccinia virus
► Molluscum contagiosum virus
Smallpox virus
► Small pox is eradicated from the earth.
► Last case in somalia in 1977.
► Eradication possible: Single stable serotype,
No animal reservoir, easy clinical diagnosis,
no subclinical or carrier state.
► Vaccine contains live attenuated vaccinia
virus.
Molluscum contagiosum virus

►A member of pox family


► Transmitted by close personal contact &
sexually.
► Causes small, pink, papular, wartlike benign
tumors of skin.
► No vaccine.

► Non enveloped DNA virus include:


Adenovirus
Papillomavirus
Parvovirus B19
Adenovirus
Adenovirus
► Non enveloped ds DNA virus.
► Contains
protruding fibers which helps in
attachment & are hemagglutinin.
► There are 41 known antigenic types.
Adenovirus

► Transmission: Through aerosol droplet,


fecal-oral, and direct inoculation into
conjunctiva.
► Clinical findings:
► Type - 3, 4, 7 & 21 cause respiratory tract
infection: fever, sorethroat, coyza, bronchitis
& atypical pneumonia.

► Type- 8 & 19 cause keratocojunctivitis.
► Type- 11& 21 cause hemorrhagic cystitis.
► Type-40 & 41 cause infantile gastroenteritis
with nonbloody diarrhea.
Adenovirus
► Isolation of virus by culture.
► Serological test: Antibody titer ( 4 fold rise),
complement fixation test & hemagglutination
inhibition test.
Papillomavirus
Papillomavirus
► Nonenveloped, ds DNA virus.
► There at least 100 types of papillomavirus.
► Some causes malignancies.
► Malignancy is associated with E6 & E7
genes, encodes p53 & retinoblastoma
genes respectively.
Papillomavirus
► Transmission: Primarily occurs by direct
contact and sexually.
► Clinical findings:
► HPV cause benign tumors (wart) on the
skin.
► HPV1, 2, 3 & 4 cause skin & planter wart.
► HPV6 & HPV 11 cause genital wart.
► HPV 16 & HPV 18 are associated with
carcinoma of cervix, penis & anus.
Papillomavirus
► Lab diagnosis:
► Mainly diagnosed by clinical ground.
► DNA hybridization test is also available.
Parvovirus
General properties

► Smallest, SS DNA virus.

► Non-enveloped.

► Associated with Transient aplastic crisis in

patients with sickle cell disease, erythema


infectiosum and congenital infections.
Parvovirus

► Parvovirus B-19 - only human pathogen

► Transmission: Occurs through respiratory

droplet, placenta & blood transfusion


Clinical significance...
► Erythema infectiosum ( fifth disease)
► Aplastic anemia.
► Congenital infections
 spontaneous abortion - ( first trimester)
 Hydrops fetalis ( 2nd or 3rd trimester)
