Energy Conservation

Energy conservation means reduction in energy

consumption but without any sacrifice of quality or
quantity of production.
In other words, increasing the production from a
given amount of energy input by reducing losses or
wastages and maximizing the efficiency.
Why we want to conserve energy?

In order to reduce energy costs.

Industrial and commercial users may want to

increase efficiency and thus maximize profit.

To lessen the climate change.

Energy conservation may results in:-

Increase of financial capital.

Increase of environmental value.

Increase of personal security.

Increase of human comfort.

Benefits of Energy Conservation:-

Energy conservation is an important element of

energy policy.

Energy conservation reduces the energy

consumption.

It reduces the rise in energy costs.

It reduces the need for new power plants.

It provides more flexibility in choosing the most

preferred method of energy production.

It facilitates the replacement of non-renewable

energy resources with renewable energy
Energy conservation in Pakistan
ENERCON:-

Energy conservation in Pakistan is done under

the department of ENERCON.

National Energy Conservation Centre (ENERCON) is

an attached department of the Ministry of
Environment, Government of Pakistan.
History of ENERCON:-

 Created in December 1986 under Ministry of Planning &

Development

 Transferred to Ministry of Water & Power on 19-10-1993

 Transferred to Ministry of Environment on 24-01-1996

 Attached Department on 26-02 -1997

Mission:-

 Cultivating a new energy culture.

 Focusing on achieving sustainable development through

conservation.

Efficient use of energy resources .

To Steer Pakistan towards an energy Efficient and

Environment Friendly Tomorrow.
Energy Consumption by sector:-
Industrial Sector takes the largest slice of national
energy consumption closely followed by transport
sector (28%).
EC potential in various sectors:-

Industry
25%

Transport
20%

Agriculture
20%

Building
30%

Average
25%
Conservation Imperatives:-

Energy conservation represents least-cost ‘supply’

option .

Efficient energy use reduces economic costs,

losses, imports, infrastructure loading, etc.
Extensive EC opportunities in Pakistan on both the
supply (production and distribution) and demand
(end-consumption) sides
Energy Audit
Energy Audit:-

Energy Audit is an official, technical survey of

energy consumption of an
organization/plant/equipment, aimed at
reduction of energy consumption without
affecting productivity and suggests methods
for energy conservation and reduction in
energy cost.
Energy Conservation Opportunities (ECOs):-

The suggestions and recommendations are known as

ECOs and their implementation is known as ECMs
(Energy Conservation Measures)
The recommendations are presented in three
categories:-

1. Category A: Minor ECOs

2. Category B: Medium ECOs
3. Category C: Major ECOs
Minor ECOs:-

They are simple.

Easy to implement.

Require less investment.

Require less implementation time.

Features :-

These are related with stopping of leakage points.

Avoiding careless waste.

Avoiding housekeeping, lapses and carelessness of

O&M personnel.
Medium ECOs:-

They are slightly complex.

Requiring additional investment

Moderate implementation time.

Major ECOs:-

They are complex.

They require heavy investment .

Long implementation time.
