1. Overview of the agricultural sector
Climate:
o Peru has 28 climate varieties from the 32 identified worldwide. o Characterized by being a natural greenhouse, this allows to convert deserts into agricultural areas. Biodiversity:
o 4,400 species of vegetables with known properties. o 4,000 types of potatoes. o 25,000 species of plants (represents 10% of the total species worldwide). o Andean region: quinoa, kiwicha, tarwi, among other andean cereals, with high protein content; camelids. o Rainforest region: exotic fruits such as cocona, aguaje and camucamu. During 2013, Mi Riego has approved 235 projects that represent US$ 360 million. These projects will generate 67,212 irrigated ha., benefiting 70,578 rural families, distributed in 16 different regions of Peru.
The Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (MIDIS) has created a fund named Fund for Economic Inclusion in Rural Areas FONIE. This fund focuses in closing the infrastructure and basic services gap in rural areas.
