On GSM layer, we generally have 2 TRXs per cell (1 BCCH + 1 TCH) As expected, we have more TRXs on DCS (capacity layer) DCS BCCH cells are rare

DCS contributes approx. half drops than GSM with three folds traffic

Network is limited by 900 band in quality terms Any improvement in 900 band would translate into substantial network improvement * Central Region Stats 7 8/31/2014 Statistical Analysis Way Forward On GSM layer, strategies need to be developed to improve BCCH/TCH qualities
For BCCH Quality, BCCH retune based on MRs is recommended For TCH Quality, progressive hopping strategies can be used * Central Region Stats 8 8/31/2014 Hopping Strategies Four possible hopping methodologies are: Reuse1 Reuse3 Baseband Hopping Discrete Frequency Hopping (DFH)
9 8/31/2014 Hopping Strategies Explanation Four possible hopping methodologies are: Reuse1 One hopping list shared by all cells within a site Reuse3 Separate hopping list for each cell with a site Baseband Hopping TRXs with fixed frequencies call hops on different TRXs # of TRXs = # of ARFCNs Discrete Frequency Hopping (DFH) Similar to Baseband, but planned TCH frequencies are put in a MAL and RF hopping is used # of TRXs <= # of ARFCNs Both Reuse1 and Reuse3 can be used 10 8/31/2014 Hopping Strategies Usage Four possible hopping methodologies are: Reuse1 900/1800 : currently in use Reuse3 900: not possible due to in-sufficient hopping frequencies 1800: no substantial gain since network is asymmetric Baseband Hopping 900/1800: Difficult to plan and every additional TRX requires cluster level retunes Discrete Frequency Hopping (DFH) 900/1800: similar to baseband To overcome expansion issues, few idle channels can be planned in MAL 11 8/31/2014 Discrete Frequency Hopping Vs. BBH DFH is similar to Baseband Hopping (BBH) in the context that we plan at least as many ARFCNs as the number of TRXs
DFH is better than BBH in following cases: + We can plan idle ARFCNs in DFH MAL to cater for future expansions + Power Control algorithm remains un-effected since no hopping between BCCH and TCH TRXs + Idle ARFCNs give quality gains as long as we dont use them for capacity enhancement + Flexibility to use Reuse1 or Reuse3 for DFH MAL
Thus we can safely conclude that DFH is better than BBH, given our spectrum portfolio 12 8/31/2014 Discrete Frequency Hopping Vs. RF Hopping DFH is modified RF hopping, with each MAL planned to reduce collisions
DFH compared to RF Hopping + DFH plan is based on network MRs, hence planned frequencies are identified based on propagation contour of a specific cluster DFH is less flexible to network changes (TRX expansions and removal). This effect can be reduced (cannot be removed) by planning idle ARFCNs in DFH MAL. TRX expansions under no idle ARFCN scenario would require cluster level retune + Collision probability can be substantially reduced in DFH, resulting in improved network KPIs

17 8/31/2014 Case Study Sialkot City Based on this case study, we concluded 900 MA list extension beyond 9 results in a compromise in 900 BCCH quality, hence for 900 TCH quality improvement, other hopping strategies should be evaluated 900 BCCH retune for the complete network can provide substantial gains in network KPIs MR based tuning methods may provide further gain, since Interference Matrices are developed based on actual propagation Thank you 18 8/31/2014
