FIELD
Psychology is made up of many sub fields,
each with its own subject matter, theories
and methods.
Many people mistakenly believe that almost
all psychologists analyze and treat abnormal
behavior.
The range and scope of psychology is much
broader than this common misconception.
1.CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGISTS
Deal with the study, diagnosis and treatment
of abnormal behavior.
Trained to diagnose and treat problems
ranging from everyday crisis of life to more
extreme conditions.
Explore the relationship between
psychological factors and physical diseases.

Trained to conduct research in emotional and
behavioral problems.
Employed in mental hospitals, institutions for
mentally retarded, private practice clinics.

Psychologist
A psychologist is the one who completes
the equivalent of four years of full time
study in psychology and then an
additional two year of post graduate study
in psychology
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PSYCHOLOGIST
AND PSYCHIATRIST
PSYCHOLOGIST:
A highly trained professional who
specializes in creating, teaching and
applying psychological knowledge.
PSYCHIATRIST:
A person trained in medicine who has
specialist qualifications in psychiatry and
can legally prescribe drugs.

Concerned with psychological problems
relating to education.
(improvement of teaching techniques,
learning, motivation process, teacher student
interaction).
Guiding students who need special attention.
Testing provides special information.

The present trend is to define experimental
psychology not in terms of specific content
areas, but as a study of scientific method

biological processes in animals and in
human beings.

COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY: conduct
research on perception, memory, thinking,
problem solving.
4.DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOLOGISTS
Study how physical, social, emotional,
cognitive changes occurs in human beings
throughout the course of their lives.
Concerned with specific factors that interact
to shape behavior.
Heredity, maturation and socialization.
Environment affects behavior.
Changes in the behavior occur rapidly in the
early years of life.
5.INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGISTS
Fastest growing areas in the field.
Devise special tests for the selection
process.
Market or consumer research
Evaluate consumers attitudes and make
suggestions for boosting sale.

6.SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGISTS
We are all part of a complex network of
social interactions.
Concerned with the impact of groups and
culture upon individual behavior.
Study the effect of social influences on the
development of intelligence.
7.COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGISTS
Work with the problems of adjustment in the
normal person.
Help people to adjust to emotional or
personal problems .
Assess and treat people with behavior
problems.
8.PHYSIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGISTS
Concerned with relationship between bodily
processes and behavior.
Conduct research on how the brain regulates
various motivation?
( Hunger and thirst).
Sport Psychologist
Helps sportsmen to achieve peak level
mentally
Forensic Psychologist
Works in settings associated with the legal
process and correctional services.
Health Psychologist
Works on promotion of health-related
behavior.
Community Psychologist
Helps people to achieve their goals in
areas such as community health and
welfare
Academic Psychologist
Undertakes research on areas of interest
in psychology and supervises research
projects of students.
