THE ROLES OF

COMPUTER-ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING


(CALL) AND AUTONOMY
IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING

Background
O Teachers are challenged to make students
self-sufficient and autonomous.
O The rapid development of ICT has caused
great changes in society and education.
O The presence of ICT in education has
given strength and is a great potential if
used properly.
O the use of CALL is very beneficial for
language learning particularly if CALL
applications were well-designed and used.
RESEARCH METHOD

O This study employs a descriptive research design as the
objectives of this study are to answer the who, what,
when, where and how of the subjects under
study/investigation.
O Using descriptive techniques makes it possible to present
situation or the features of high-school students having
computer-assisted language program in their English
classes which lead to their autonomy in learning.
Population and Samples

O The sampling procedure used in this study
falls under the label purposeful sampling.
The study was conducted in high-schools
(public and private) having English
lessons conducted using computers and
the Internet. There are 356 students of 12
senior high-schools from 6 big cities in
Java, Indonesia (Jakarta, Bandung,
Jogjakarta, Surakarta, Surabaya, and
Malang) and 12 teachers of each school.
Research Instrument

O Four sets of questionnaires. Two sets for students
and two sets for teachers.
O Interviews (semi-structured
interviews) for teachers and students

FINDINGS
O Teachers and students have substantial
experiences of using computers and the
Internet
O Most students spend 4 8 hours for CALL

O 317 out of 356 students use CALL
O 10 teachers make sure that students use
CALL
O 354 students enjoy using computers and
the Internet
O 306 students prefer to use CALL
O 202 students use Google translate
O 174 students use FB, twitter, and
MySpace for socializing

to be independent.
O Students understand their learning
autonomy
O Teachers are still needed to guide
students
DISCUSSIONS
O Students have substantial experiences in
using computers/the Internet. This helps
them use CALL.
O Teachers support the use of CALL by
giving assignments accomplished by
browsing the Internet and or presenting
using multi media equipment
O Google translate is very practical for
students as teachers do not give more
information on websites for studying
English
CONCLUSIONS
O Google translate is very popular
O Social media is used by students
O CALL has roles in students autonomy
O CALL has help students more
independent
O Teachers guidance is still needed
