THE STRUGGLE FOR

NORTH AMERICA
Mr. McCaskill
A Trading Empire
Other countries began establishing colonies.
A large number of French colonist had no desire
to build towns or raise families.
These settlers included Catholic priests who
sought to convert Native Americans.
The French were less interested in occupying
territories than they were in making money off the
land.
The English Arrive in North
America
The explorations of the Spanish and French
inspired the English.
In 1606, King James wanted to found a colony in
North America.
That year, England reached the coast of Virginia.
The colonist claimed the land as theirs. England
named the settlement Jamestown in honor of their
king.
The Settlement of Jamestown
The colonys start was a disaster!
The settlers were more interested in finding gold
than in planting crops.
During the first few years, seven out of every ten
people died of hunger, disease, or battles with
the Native Americans.
The colony improved after farmers discovered
tobacco.
High demand in England for tobacco made it a
huge cash crop!
England Battles France
The English became hungry for more land for their
growing colonial population.
They pushed farther west into the continent.
By doing so, they collided with Frances North
American holdings.
As time passed, France and England began to
interfere with each other.
It seemed that a major conflict was on the horizon.
War Breaks Out!
The conflict became known as the French and
Indian War.
The war became part of a larger conflict known as
the Seven Years War.

Native Americans Respond
As in Mexico and South America, the arrival of
Europeans had a great impact on Native
Americans.
European colonies brought mostly disaster for
Native Americans.
Unlike the French and Dutch, the English
sought to populate their colonies North
America.
This meant pushing the natives off their land.
A Strained Relationship
The English colonists took more land for their
population and tobacco.
The English settlers considered Native
Americans heathens.
People without faith
Over time, the English viewed Native
Americans as devils and threats to their godly
society.
Settlers and Native Americans
Battle
The hostility between the settlers and Native
Americans led to war.
However, more destructive than the
Europeans weapons were their diseases.
The diseases devastated the native population
in North America.
The Effects
One of the effects was a severe shortage of
workers in the colonies.
In order to meet their growing labor needs,
European colonists soon turned to another
group of people.
