If you have ever taken career
assessments in high school, chances
are likely that you may have formed a
not-too-complimentary opinion about
them. That is too bad, because when
they are selected, administered, and
interpreted properly, they can be a
valuable tool in career decision-
making.
3
Google the term career
assessment, and you will discover
more than 1 million hits! No doubt
about it career tests are big
business with billions of dollars
being spent annually

The Tennessee College
and Career Planning
System powered by
Kuder assesses students
interests, skills, and work
values. Sponsored by
Edsouth, every student in
Tennessee may use this
program
free of charge!
7
Kuder
is not
just a test.
8
So during the 2007-2008 school year,
the Kuder assessments were
administered to all eighth
graders as well as tenth,
eleventh and twelfth graders
through their English
classes.

9
Since some school counselors had previous
training with the program, they were given the
option to:
How
I would administer the assessments
Id help them administer the assessments
administer the assessments themselves
10
The 2007-2008 results:
11
After the fall semester of 2007, I meet with Cumberland Countys:
Director of Schools
School Supervisors
Principals
Director of Special Education
I pitched the plan!
12
I presented my rationale for:

getting school counselors help
using English classes and therefore English teachers
including computer lab personnel in the training

finally fixing technology related issues
who does what, when and where
13
I think Kuder would be good for all 8th graders.
If we all use the program, it will not gather dust and
the kids will benefit greatly.
I do think all eighth graders and above should be
mandated to use the Kuder's Career Planning
System. It offers so much that can be added to and
used for life.
Wed like to continue with Kuder.
In my opinion, the Kuder is an advanced career
assessment. If used, it should be incorporated into a
required class so that students would have
instructional guidance in the use of the program.
I addressed the positive feedback from our
Middle School Counselors
14
and even the negative feedback
We have the disadvantage of not having our own
computer lab anymore and the Kuder is too long to
complete in one day at CCHS. Also, the
vocabulary was not at the 8th grade level and
difficult for several students which makes the
results inaccurate. If Kuder could shorten a
version for Middle School students AND bring the
vocabulary level down to below their level for
better comprehension, then it would be great to
use instead of the Careerscope each year.
15
We like the Kuder system. We like the
benefits students have in using their career
planning system as well as the other
resources Kuder offers. The biggest problem
we have run into in using any of these
systems is students utilizing them. We have
been talking to students about the benefits of
using the Kuder as well as the resources it
can offer them. We think the most important
thing is that it is consistent across the county.
We do like all that Kuder has to offer.
Feedback from the H.S. Counselors
16
and more from H.S. Counselors
We found the Kuder material to be
very useful and we feel it would benefit
our county greatly to implement in the
8th grade. We also feel the students
would benefit from developing their six
year plans on line with the Kuder
resources provided. The training was
exceptional, thank you for sharing such
a wonderful resource!

OK, I admit it! It's time to confess. I've been talking about some of you and this is what I said

In the past three years, over 3,000 of our Cumberland County students have created an on-line portfolio
using the Tennessee College and Career Planning System powered by Kuder. Under the guidance of our
CTE Computer Lab Coordinator, Josette Schlafer, this year alone over 700 students have created and placed
their educational plan in their on-line portfolio. Teachers are also discovering the value of this resource.
Career Management Success teacher, Judy York and Special Education teacher, Tracy Sinclair have used
the career assessments in the Kuder program to address their students career interests, skills and work
values. Class discussion focused on choosing a career for post-high school life. Other teachers, including
Tony Shultz, Ned Serleth and Andrea Simmons, use the program for class projects. In Coach Shultzs
Career Management Success class, students build resumes using the program as well as explore colleges
and scholarship opportunities. In Mr. Serleths English class, students are to investigate a number of topics
about a career of interest to them and then post a research paper in their Kuder portfolio. Mr. Serleth then
has the ability to access the research paper in the students on-line portfolio. In our ever-increasing need to
reduce supply costs as well as help the environment, Mr. Serleth is doing both while meeting curriculum
objectives. School counselor, Andrea Simmons, met in small groups with her seniors and had them post their
resumes in their on-line Kuder portfolio. That resume as well as a myriad of other resources in this lifelong
program will be available for students to use free of charge whenever they need them. you!

So, that's the truth! I said it! I think you teachers deserve recognition for using the Kuder program with your
students. Put this in your "way to go" file! Thanks for using another tool to lead and guide our students.
Let EVERYONE know when someone is doing something right!

The results: this year Im hearingwell, if Ned can do it, I guess
I can too! Positive competition is a wonderful thing!
