INTRODUCTION
Precast (prefabricated) construction includes those buildings
where the majority of structural components are standardized
and produced in plants in a location away from the building,
and then transported to the site for assembly.

Structural precast concrete elementsslabs, beams, girders,

columns, and wall panelsare cast and cured in factories,
transported to the construction job site, and erected as rigid
components.

MAIN FEATURES OF PRECAST

CONSTRUCTION PROCESS:
Division and specialization of the human workforce.
Reduction in labour cost
Increased efficiency, high quality control and greater control on
finishes.
Faster and less affected by adverse weather conditions.
Tornado/Hurricane damage resistance
Fire resistance
Earthquake resistant up to 6 on Richter Scale

DESIGN CONCEPTS FOR

PRECAST CONCRETE
BUILDINGS

LOADS AND STRESSES

All loading and restraint conditions from casting to end use of
the structure should be considered.
The stresses developed in precast elements during the period
from casting to final connections.
Special attention:
methods of stripping, storing, transporting and erecting
precast elements.

PRECAST ELEMENT SIZE

Factors affecting size and shape of precast elements:
(1) Size of crane available to undertake erection
(2) Access to and around the site
(3) Propping and/or bracing requirements
(4) Transport restrictions.

REINFORCEMENT DESIGN
Additional reinforcement requirement:
for safe handling and propping of elements

(1) At temporary support points

(2) Handling elements which do not achieve their full
strength until being built

University of New South Wales Village project

It comprises 19 buildings,
ranging from one to nine
storeys with various styles to
house more than 1000
students of the university.
The project used 1200
sandwich panels and 17,500
square metres of precast
hollow core flooring planks to
help achieve the thermal
efficiency.
