Do Now 4 Minutes

Mr. E wants to find out how many

one-sixths are in 3, so he wrote the
following division number
sentence:

1
6

Is he correct? How do you know?

How many

7

3.

How many two-thirds are in 4?

are in 5?

Lesson Overview

We have done an excellent job

with dividing fractions by fractions.

Now that we understand why using

the invert and multiply rule is the
same as drawing a model, we can
solve division with fraction
problems much quicker so long as
we understand the questions!

Today we will work on converting

fractions to decimals to make
adding and subtracting decimals
easier.

Can we add these two mixed numbers? Why or why not?

Can we use the work we did on the last page to help us add these mixed numbers?

Before we add these mixed numbers, lets round both addends to the nearest whole
number. Next, find the sum.

Lets try adding these mixed numbers using the addends we saved from before. Line
up the addends correctly and then add.

What do you notice about the sums?

Can we subtract these two mixed numbers? Why or why not?

We will solve this problem in two different ways. Well solve it by using fractions,
and by using decimals.

A difference is the result of subtraction or the answer to a subtraction problem.

Were the answers the same? How do we know?

Using a Calculator. 5 minutes

Each group will get 1 calculator. We will use the calculators to find the sum and
difference of the following two questions.

Question #1 422

Look at question #1. How can we use our calculators to help us find the
difference?

Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

Question #2 23 5 + 45 8
