POST OFFICE BOX

- INTRODUCTION
The Post Office Box was a Wheatstone
bridge style testing device with pegs
and spring arms to close electrical
circuits and measure properties of
the circuit under test.

DIAGRAM OF POST OFFICE BOX

MEASURMENT OF UNKOWN
RESISTANCE
A post office (PO) box operates on the same
principle as Wheatstone bridge which consists of
four resistances R1, R2, R3 and R4 that are
connected to each other as shown in the circuit
diagram. In this circuit, E is a voltage source, G is
a galvanometer and K1 and K2 are two keys. If
the values of the resistances are adjusted so that
no current flows through the galvanometer
(balance condition), then the resistances R1, R2,
R3 and R4 satisfy the relationship,

R1/R2=R3/R4

TYPE OF POST OFFICE BOX

PLUG TYPE
Plug type, in polished wooden box with hinged lid
and panel to show circuit connections. Coils of
constantan wire double silk covered are wound
non0inductively. Three pairs of ratio arms are
each 10, 100, 1000 ohms and resistance arms
contains 16 coils from 1 to 5000 ohms with
infinity plug. Total value 11, 110 ohms. Two spring
keys having contact for battery and galvanometer
fitted. Accuracy of coils 100 to 500 ohms 0.05%
and of the rest coils 0.1%

DIAL TYPE POST OFFICE BOX

Two decade having ratio of the bridge consists of four coils
each, to give ratio arms of 0.001, 0.01, 1, 10, 100, 1000.
Four decade resistance units total 11,110 ohms. The coils of
constantan wire double silk covered are wound noninductively and mounted on the stems of the dial studs
with a ball click device to ensure correct location., the
brushes are of laminated phosphor-bronze, with rare
contact areas to give a low and constant dial contact
resistance. Two terminals are provided for using the four
decade resistance units as a four dial decade resistance
box. Two enclosed type tapping keys for battery and
galvanometer. Terminals for connections of unknown
resistance, battery and galvanometer. Accuracy of 0.1% on
coils above 1 ohm, 0.05% on unit coils.

ACCURACY
PLUG TYPE
Accuracy of coils 100 to 500 ohms
0.05% and of the rest coils 0.1%
DIAL TYPE
Accuracy of 0.1% on coils above 1
ohm, 0.05% on unit coils.

DISADVANTAGE OF POST POFFICE BOX

The method of comparing electrical resistances
which has been already described depends on
the measurement of the deflexion produced in a
galvanometer, and we make the assumptions that
the E.M.F. of the battery remains constant during
the experiment, and that the relation between
the current flowing through the galvanometer
and the deflexion it produces is known. The
disadvantages which thus arise are avoided in the
Wheatstone bridge method, the principles of
which we proceed to describe.
