Definition
Corrosives are materials that can attack and
chemically destroy exposed body tissues.

Uses
Some corrosive chemicals are valued for
various uses, the most common of which is in
household cleaning agents.
For example, most drain cleaners contain
either acids or alkalis due to their capabilities
of dissolving greases and proteins inside water
pipes such as limescale.[3]

Effects on living tissue


To Health
Corrosives can burn and destroy body tissues
on contact. Some corrosives are toxic and can
cause other health problems.
To Eyes
Corrosive materials can severely irritate, or in
come cases, burn the eyes.

To skin
Corrosives touching the skin can severely
irritate or even badly burn and blister the skin.
To Breathe
Breathing in corrosive vapours or particles
irritates and burns the inner lining of the nose,
throat, windpipe and lungs.

Swallowing corrosives burns the sensitive lining
of the mouth, throat, esophagus and stomach.
When corrosives touch metals
Many corrosives attack and corrode metals.
Contact with corrosives can damage containers,
equipment, installations and building
components made from unsuitable materials.

trained to handle the problem or if it is clearly
beyond your control.
Alert other people in the area to the
emergency.
Call the fire department immediately.
