Bio-binder
Formulation as an
Asphalt Substitute

Asphalt or flexible pavement is typically built with several

layers to form a layered system with better materials at the
top where the stress intensity is high and inferior materials
at the bottom where the stress intensity is low. The top
layer, called the surface course, is typically made of an
asphalt mixture.
All types of failure or distress can be classified by whether
they are structural or functional failures and load
associated or non-load associated distresses.

The

use of bio-binder technology as a replacement

to petroleum-based asphalt binders has gained
considerable attention in the recent years.

Most

adhesives or binders that are used for

pavement materials are derived primarily from
fossil fuels.

There

is a drive to develop and produce binders

from alternative resources, particularly from biorenewable resources.

These

bio-renewable resources are processed to

become bio-oils.

The

mixtures that form a bio-binder include biooils and polymer additives.

Pre-treating a bio-oil by mechanical mixing at a

temperature of from about 100 C. to about 130 C. such
that the bio-oil achieves a viscosity of less than about 3
Pas at a temperature of from about 100 C. to about 130
C. and is equivalent to the bio-oil being mixed at a
temperature of from about 100 C to about 130 C to
achieve an aging index of less than about 12 after from
about 2 to about 8 hours;

Adding a polymer additive to the pre-treated bio-oil;

Heating the blend at a temperature of from about 100 C

to about 130 C; and

Treating the heated blend to a viscosity between about

100 and about 1000 cps when measured in a rotational
viscometer at about 20 rpm and a temperature of from
about 100 C to about 130 C.

Rusting Susceptibility: Hamburg Loaded-Wheel

Tester

Moisture Resistance: Modified Lottman Test

Fracture Resistance: Semi-Circular Bending Test

The results revealed that mixtures modified with biobinder had similar or improved rutting performance.
With regards to moisture susceptibility; all mixtures
exceeded the 80% tensile strength ratio.
Mixtures that contained bio-binder exhibited reduced
fracture resistance.
Bio-binder has improved the low temperature fracture
performance of the mixtures.

The benefits of this technology include a low cost asphalt binder

substitute that performs as well as asphalt binders currently
being used.
Furthermore, the bio-binder likely lowers hot mix asphalt plant
production temperatures, and thus reduces plant emissions.
Lastly, the bio-binder represents the development of green
materials/technologies that are renewable, and lessen the
reliance on foreign crude oil.

Porous Asphalt
Pavement

The porous asphalt pavement technology is not

yet fully implemented in our country but our
government has the plans to employ it in the
Philippines.

Porous pavement is a permeable pavement

surface with an underlying stone reservoir to
temporarily store surface runoff before it
infiltrates into the subsoil.

Porous asphalt and pervious concrete look the

same as traditional pavement from the surface,
but are manufactured without the fine particle
sizes, and incorporate void spaces to allow
infiltration.

Formulated with larger aggregate and less fine

particles.

Mixed at a standard asphalt plant.

Has an open-graded surface drains.

Beneath

its surface, underlying stone reservoir

that then filters water directly into the underlying
soil, or storm-drain system.

Treats a low traffic or overflow parking area.

Some application on highways, where it is
currently used as a surface material to reduce
hydroplaning.
Shoulders of roadways, runways, and airport
taxiways
Parking areas and pedestrian walkways

It helps in flood control.

It recharges groundwater to underlying aquifers.

Reduced sprays from travelling vehicles, reduced
roadway noise.

It allows for reduction of storm water

infrastructure.

Porous asphalt pavement requires routine

vacuum sweeping,

Construction stage sediment control is critical
