Train Traffic Control (TTC)

Communication
Ch Vasudev/ICT1/IRISET

What is Control communication?

It is the telephone communication network
between control office and wayside
stations which is used to control, supervise and regulate the train
movements so that the line capacity can be
optimized

Basic block in Control Commn

A division is the basis for providing CC
For this purpose
A control Office is setup at each divisional
headquarters station in a railway zone
Then, individual telephone communication
links are provided between each controller in
the CO and all wayside stations/cabins/loco
sheds etc., under his control.
Each of these telephone communication
links is known as a Control Circuit.

Control Office
The control office is considered as the nerve
center of Divisional Operating organization.
In a Railway zone for every division one Control
Office is provided at its divisional headquarters
office.
Apart from the Divisional control offices, the
following are also provided if traffic needs
demand
Sub-control office- Where the traffic density justifies,
separate organization for controlling and regulating
traffic in a limited portion of the division.
Area Control officeat areas of exceptionally
industrial or commercial importance.

Types of Control Circuits

Different types of control circuits:

Section Control / Train Control Circuit

Deputy Control Circuit
Loco Power Control Circuit
Traction Loco Control Circuit
Traction Power Control Circuit
Emergency Control Circuit
Engineering Control
Maintenance Order Wire Control

Following Means can be used for

providing Control Communication
2-wire overhead line
Which can be used in non-electrified areas
only. This is now almost obsolete

4-wire (Quad) line in an under ground

(UG) cable For electrified (RE) areas or
Which is in extensive use at present

A telephone channel on a OFC

communication system
Which is gradually replacing UG cable system

Nature of control circuit

Irrespective of the type of medium
(overhead line/ under ground cable/ OFC)
all control circuits are of OMNIBUS in
nature
Omnibus means a common means for
all the users. All users (controller and
wayside station masters are connected in
parallel to a common communication
line.

Selective Calling
Selective calling is the name given to the
technique used for calling (signaling) an
individual subscriber
on an Omnibus
communication link.
IR employed the following types of selective
calling methods, so far, in TTC communication
High Voltage DC impulses
Low voltage AC impulses
DTMF ( Dual Tone Multi Frequency) tones

Only DTMF technology is in use at present.

Type of Equipment used

DTMF Control office Equipment
Used by Controller

DTMF Way station Equipment

Used by Station Masters, along the route
It consists of
1) Control Telephone and
2) DTMF decoder
( In selective calling method it is required to produce
telephone ringing signal locally)

Types of TTC Communication Systems

1) Under Ground Quad cable system
Conventional System- uses CO equipment,
Way station equipment and additionally VF
repeater at 50 km intervals along the cable
route.
Equaliser Amplifier System- uses CO
equipment and VF repeater of Equaliser
Amplifier type at every way station
It offers 8-line Local Intercom & Remote
monitoring facilities which were not there in
conventional system

2) CCEO (Control Communication Equipment
for OFC) system
As the name implies this system is meant for
use with OFC medium. It comprises the
following segments

Use of different control circuits

Section Control / Train Control (SC)
This is provided for communication between the
section/train controller in the control office and
way side stations, junction stations, block
cabins, loco sheds and yards in a division for the
control of train movements and effective
utilization of section capacity.

Deputy Control
This is provided for communication between the
Deputy Controller in the control office and
important stations, junctions and terminal
stations, yard masters offices, loco sheds and
important signal cabins in a division for
supervisory purpose.

Traction Loco Control (TLC)

This is a special circuit in the electrified(RE)
sections and is provided for communication
between the Traction Loco Controller in the CO
and the electric loco sheds, station masters
offices at junctions and terminal stations, yards
masters, Divisional Officers and Traffic Control
Officer in a division for the optimum utilization of
electric locomotives.
This is analogous to Loco Power Control in
Diesel Traction Areas.

Traction Power Control (TPC)

This is a special circuit in the electrified(RE)
sections and is provided for communication
between the Traction Power Controller in the
control office and station masters offices, grid
stations, feeding posts, sectioning posts, subsectioning posts, important signal cabins,
divisional officers and traffic control offices in a
division to facilitate efficient maintenance of
operation of the electric overhead system.

Emergency Control
This is also a special circuit in the RE sections
and is provided from a point at every kilo meter
along the track for communication between the
train crew in emergencies, traction and
permanent way maintenance staff, and the
control office.

Engineering Control
This circuit is provided for the use of Engineering
Department for its maintenance and day to day
repair purposes. This is connected to Permanent
Way(PW) offices along the track.
