Masthead- this is the title of the magazine, it is usually the most eye

catching as it is the biggest font on the page that is bold.


Main image- this is the biggest image on the page usually showing a
well known celebrity, is it usually positioned centre of the page and
will be the main article within the magazine.
Taglines- are catchy, small phrases that are used to advertise and sell
magazines.
Plugs- these are used to catch the readers attention as they are usually
advertising free things that you can get when buying the magazine.
Barcode- this is so that the audience can consume the magazine.
Date line- used to tell the audience and institution when the
magazine was released.
Cover line- these are usually smaller side articles that are featured in
the magazine, they give you a very brief summary of the story.
Skyline- this is located at the very top of the page, its gives a brief
persuasive phrase about the magazine e.g. (UKs Biggest).

Contents title- This is used to tell the audience what the page is
going to be about, it is usually at the top of the page and is mostly
in a bigger font to the rest.
Magazine logo- This is used to show continuity of the front page
and to show a housestyle.
Main inset image- This is usually the biggest convention on the
page and is positioned as most important as text/ articles etc
surround it.
Headings- These are used to introduce each different article to the
audience so its easy for them to locate information they want.
Vertical column- This is used to organise the articles/text in a
smart and professional way so the magazine looks effective to the
audience.
Page numbers- These are used to help the audience to locate
certain information they want to read quickly and easily.

Main image- This is usually the biggest convention on the page it


mostly features a celebrity and is usually most powerful on the
page as information surrounds it.
Gutter- This is majority of the time a quote from the main article it
can be positioned anywhere of the page but usually near the main
image.
Headline- This is usually an introduction of an article so it will be
easier for the audience to know what the article is going to be
about.
Kicker- This summaries the article and will be positioned
underneath the headline.
Drop cap- This is a bigger capital letter than normal which simply
tells you where the article starts.
Web address- Gives the reader an alternative to find information

Buzz word- (on the front cover) words such as New, exclusive as
these are used to persuade the reader to want to buy the magazine
as they are powerful and persuasive words that influence the
reader.
Institutional details (on the contents page)- these are used to
inform the reader of the issue. I will use this convention as this
gives the audience more alternative ways to access information
about the magazine.
Adapted magazine logo ( on the double page spread)- the
magazines logo slightly changed to fit the layout of the double
page spread. I will use this to show continuity throughout the
magazine which makes the magazine become well known and
popular as well as recognisable.
