What percent of the circles below

are shaded purple? Green? Blue?
Red?

Mr. E bought 3 more turtles for the

school aquarium. If this is 10% of
the total number of turtles the
school has, how many turtles does
the school have in its aquarium?

Proportions say that two ratios are

equal. They can be used to solve
percent problems. Look at the
proportion below. Solve the
proportion below by finding the
value of x.

Lesson Overview

Continuing with yesterdays lesson

on ordering integers, today we will
place integers in order from
greatest to least and least to
greatest using inequality symbols.
There are a few more inequality
symbols. We will learn about them
later on in the year.

Greater than (>)

Less Than (<)

Equal (=)

Not equal ()

Mr. Es Money 4 minutes

The amount of money Mr. E has in his pocket is less than $6 but greater than $5.

Take one minute to discuss with your group some possible values for the amount of money I
have in my pocket.

One possible value for the amount of money I have in my pocket is ____________.

An inequality statement comparing the possible value of the money in my pocket to $5:
5.00 ______ ______.

Write an inequality statement comparing the possible value of the money in my pocket to $5.

Write an inequality statement comparing the possible value of the money in my pocket to $6.

Mr. Es Money 5 minutes

The amount of money Mr. E has in his pocket is less than $6 but greater than $5.

Are there any integer solutions? (In other words, in this situation, can an integer be a
possible value? Why or why not?

Are there any numbers between 4 and 5 that are not possible values for the amount of
money in my pocket?

Using the answer from the last page, lets write one inequality statement that
describes both of these relationships.

Shoe Sizes 4 minutes

Mr. Devlin has three brothers. Their shoe sizes are size 10, 10.5, and 10.59

Plot their shoe sizes on the number line below.

Write one inequality statement to show the relationship between their shoe sizes

Inequalities in Word Problems 5 minutes

Isabella ordered the numbers -55, -20 and -18.5 from least to greatest on a quiz.
She wrote:

-18.5 > -20 > -55. Was her answer correct? Explain.

Diamond had to pay the school for two textbooks that she lost. Her mother wrote
two checks to pay the school. One for $35, and the other for $45. Write two
integers that represent the change to her mothers bank account. Write an
inequality statement that shows the relationship between the two numbers.
