A CPU (central

processing unit) is the

brain of the computer
It fetches program
instructions from RAM,
interprets and processes
it and then sends back
the computed results so
that the relevant
components can carry
out the instructions

To avoid possible damage brought by

temperature, CPUs, and other components
that release heat in general, are highly
required to have a cooling system.
The CPU is cooled down through either a
heatsink and fan assembly (HSF) or through
liquid cooling. In this lesson we will use the
heatsink and fan assembly to cool down our
CPU.

Today we will be
installing an
LGA1150 type of
Intel CPU, but this
method can be used
to other types
Materials needed:
CPU
Motherboard
Heatsink and Fan
Assembly
Thermal Paste

1. On your motherboard,
push the load lever of
the CPU socket down
to unclip it and lift to
the fully open
position.

2. The load plate will

automatically lift up
as the load lever is
pushed to the fully
open position.

NOTE: Do not touch

the socket contacts
or the bottom of
the CPU.

3. Align the notches

with the socket
alignment keys.
Lower the CPU
straight down,
without tilting or
sliding the CPU in the
socket. Inspect the
CPU to check if it is
properly seated in the
socket.

4. Close and slide the

load plate under
the retention knob.
Close and engage
the load lever.

5. When you press

down the load lever
the PnP cap will
automatically pop
up from the CPU
socket. Do not
discard the PnP
cap. Always replace
the PnP cap if the
CPU is removed
from the socket.

There are different

methods of applying the
thermal paste onto the
CPU. But all of these
methods are more or less
have the same effect on
the temperature. Today
we will be using the most
common method, which
is the middle dot method.

Place a fair amount

of thermal paste to
the center of the
heat spreader of the
CPU.
You can tell that you
have applied enough
if the paste on the
CPU is rice-sized.

1. Place the heatsink on

the motherboard with
the fans cable facing
towards the fan
connector and the
fasteners matching
the holes on the
motherboard. NOTE:

Make sure that the

narrow groove of
each pin is pointing
outward.

2. Push down the

heatsink until the
four fasteners get
wedged into the holes
on the motherboard.
Press the four
fasteners down to
fasten the heatsink.
As each fastener
locks into position a
click should be heard.

3. Inspect the
motherboard to
ensure that the
fastener-ends have
been properly
locked in place

4. Attach the CPU fan

cable to the CPU fan
connector on the
motherboard

On your workstation, install an Intel LGA1150

CPU and its stock heatsink and fan assembly
on a motherboard.
Acquire the materials from your instructor.
The activity should be finished within a
maximum of 10 minutes.
