What is AGGREGATES?

Castillo, Charisse A.

Aggregates
are inert granular materials
such as sand, gravel, or
crushed stone that, along with
water and Portland cement, are
an essential ingredient in
concrete.

Uses of Aggregates

Construction

Castillo, Charisse A.

Concrete

Asphalt and
Roadstone

Mortar

Railway
Ballast

Main Classification of
Aggregates:

1. Lightweight

Aggregates
is due to the cellular or high
internal
porous
microstructure, which gives
this type of aggregate a low
bulk specific gravity.

The most important

aspect of lightweight
aggregate is the porosity.
Castillo, Charisse A.

2. Heavyweight Aggregates is
most commonly used for
radiation shielding,
counterweights and other
applications where a high massto-volume ratio is desired.

Bulk Density of aggregate is

approximately 75-110 lb per cubic foot.

Tests of
Aggregates

The weight of the aggregate

required to fill a container of
a specified unit volume.

densely the

bulk density

Specific Gravity
1.Absolute is the ratio of the

weight of the solid to the weight

of an equal volume of water

2.Apparent is the ratio of the

weight of aggregate to the

weight of water occupying a
volume equal to that of the
solid including the impermeable
pores.
Used for calculating yield of concrete or the quantity of
aggregate required for a given volume of concrete.
Aaron, Patrice

Moisture Conditions of Aggregates

1.Oven dry- fully absorbent
2.Air dry- dry at the particle

surface but containing some

interior moisture

3.Saturated surface dry

(SSD) neither absorbing water

nor contributing water to the
concrete mixture

4.Wet or moist- containing an

excess of moisture on the
Boco, Earl
surface

Aggregate absorption is the

increase in mass due to water in
the pores of the material.
Aggregate absorption is a useful
quality because:
1.High values can indicate nondurable aggregate.
2. Absorption can indicate the
amount of asphalt binder the
aggregate will absorb.
Boco, Earl

Sieve analysis
helps to determine the
particle size
distribution of the
coarse and fine
aggregates

Advincula, Jericson

Advincula, Jericson

Fineness modulus is
an empirical factor
obtained by adding
the cumulative
percentages of
aggregate retained on
each of the standard
sieves ranging from 80
mm to 150 micron and
dividing this sum by
an arbitrary number
100.

Abrasion testing is used to test the

abrasive resistance of solid

materials.
It helps to determine the abrasion
value of coarse aggregates
Especially when concrete is used in
roads or floor surfaces to heavy
traffic load.
Harness, or resistance to wear is
determined by Los-Angeles abrasion
test
Baluyot, Alec

Wash Test
1. For this test a sample not less than 2000g should be used.
2. The apparatus used for this test are:
Wire basket-perforated,
electroplated or plastic coated with wire hangers for suspending
it from balance,
Water-tight container for suspending the basket,
Dry soft absorbent cloth-75cm by 45cm (2 nos.),
Shallow tray minimum 650 sq. cm. area,
Air tight container of a capacity similar to the baske,
and Oven
Baluyot, Alec

The gradation and size

test is used to determine
aggregate particle size
distribution.

Catiltil, John Matthew

Maximum aggregate size can be

defined in two different ways:
1.Maximum aggregate size.
The smallest sieve through
which 100 percent of the
aggregate sample particles pass.
2.Nominal maximum
aggregate size (NMAS). The
largest sieve that retains some
of the aggregate particles but
generally not more than 10
percent by weight.

Catiltil, John Matthew

The particle size distribution

of aggregates is called
grading.
The grading determine the
paste requirement for a
workable concrete since the
amount of void requires
needs to be filled by the
same amount of cement
paste in a concrete mixture.
