THE FOUR PILLARS OF

EDUCATION

The aim of development is the complete

fulfillment of the individual in all the richness of
the human personality, the complexity of human
powers of expression and commitments.

THE CONTEXT OF THE FOUR

PILLARS OF EDUCATION
The Four Pillars of Education is UNESCOs
vision of Education in the New Millennium and
the UNESCOs concocted formula to best
prepare the 21st century learners to survive in the
21st century environment.
It originated as a report drawn by the UNESO
International Commission on

Education for the 21st Century titled, Learning:

The Treasure Within, headed by Jacques Delors
in 1996.
The report was crafted in response to the ever
increasing changes and challenges in the 21st
century characterized by new sources of
information like the Internet, social networking,
mass media, new market structures and other
features of

Globalization that would require young people to

be educated to respond to this emerging new
order.

THE FOUR PLILARS OF

LEARNING
In a nutshell, the four pillars of education is
defined to be learning that allows the studnets
to take a journey from continuous learning
throughout life to live together in peace and
harmony in a globalizing world.
The journey in this regard is done at two levels:

a. INDIVIDUAL LEVEL
-. The journey is toward improving oneself to
reach ones full potentials as a human being.
b. SOCIETAL OR GLOBAL LEVEL
- The journey is towards respecting and
appreciating individual differences, groups of
people or nations to build a peacable and
caring world.

Developing all these pillars of learning requires

that schools must infuse prerequisite knowledge
and skills among the students to lead them in
these two pronged journey.
The knowledge and skills include:
a. Knowing oneself
b. Discovering others
c. Appreciating the diversity of the human race

d. Being receptive to others and to encounter

others through dialogue and debate.
e. Caring and sharing.
f. Working toward common objectives in
cooperative undertakings.
g. Managing and resolving conflicts.

BRIEF INTERPRETATION OF THE

FOUR PILLARS OF LEARNING
Education, according to UNESCO
INTERNATIONAL COMMISION is both
obliged to supply the map of a complex and
constantly restless world and the compass
needed to navigate it. Toward this end, education
must be organized around the following concerns
to ensure the well being of students in the 21st
century.

LEARNING TO KNOW
(DEVELOPMENT OF THE HEAD:
KNOWLEDGE)
This may be related to learning how to learn or
related to the Chinese proverb Give a man a
fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man
how to fish; and you have fed him for a
lifetime.
As a pillar of learning UNESCO defines that it
may be regarded as both a means and an end of
human existence.

As a means, students have to learn to understand

the world around them and as an end, they
should ultimately obtain the joy and benefits of
knowing.
