Tutorial Week 3

Why differences in customs and belief

practices do not mean that people cannot
be united?

People can be united despite the differences

in customs and belief because people
communicates and interacts between each
other to get basic daily needs and this
process eventually makes them united.
For example in Malaysia, the three main
different ethnics, Malay, Chinese and Indian,
are united as we want to achieve
Independence in Tanah Melayu.

After that, we learn to tolerate with others,

knowing and respect each others
differences and united.
This process of unity undergoes a
continuum as it is always and becoming a
fundamental or basis for living our life.

For instance, in Malay wedding ceremony,

the Malays will invite their neighbours to
join the feast.
The customs of using hands to eat is mostly
practiced by Malay and Indian, and some
Chinese as well.
There are also spoons and forks for those
who are not using their hands to eat.

Language
Language as medium of instruction
Eg: Bahasa Malaysia is used as first language
to interact, to convey messages, to
communicate and etc,..
Use language to interact with people in different
races (different beliefs and customs)
Language can unite people through activities such
as Language month, independence day activities,
poetry reading, creative writing and etc..
Thus, as people of different races get involve in
such activities, they can develop the sense of unity
and togetherness despite their differences in
customs and beliefs.

General
Differences are of superficial level
Willingness to forgo differences
Example: 13th May
Once bitten, twice shy
