Managing One's Time Effectively

WHAT IS TIME MANAGEMENT?
Time management is the act or
process of planning and exercising
conscious control over the amount of time
spent on specific activities, especially to
increase effectiveness, efficiency or
productivity.

Managing One's Time Effectively

Why use
time
management
SKILLS?

Managing One's Time Effectively

What skills are required

for effective time
management?

Managing One's Time Effectively

Some of these skills including setting clear
goals, breaking your goals down into discreet
steps, and reviewing your progress towards your
goals are covered in Action Planning.
Other skills involved include prioritizing focusing on urgent and important tasks rather
than those that are not important or don't move
you towards your goals; organizing your work
schedule; list making to remind you of what you
need to do when;persevering when things are
not working out and avoiding procrastination.

Managing One's Time Effectively

To improve your skills you must to do the
following:
1. Using Lists: Keeping a to do list
-You should have a reminder system to tell you of
when you need to do .
Advantages of using a to do list:
Focuses your mind on important objectives.
You are less likely to forget to do tasks.
Writing a list helps order your thoughts.

Managing One's Time Effectively

It helps show the bigger picture.

You don't need to hold everything in your head.
It saves time.
It helps you decide on priorities: the most
important and the most urgent.
You are less likely to become sidetracked.
You get the reward of ticking off your
achievements.
You feel more in control.
You have a record of what you've done.
You always have something to work on.

Managing One's Time Effectively

2. Setting Goals
- Set yourself specific and clearly
defined goals, and make sure that these
are realistic and achievable.
3. Prioritizing
- Efficiency and effectiveness are not
the same.

4. Avoid Procrastination
- Procrastination is the scourge of
action planning. It's important that you
manage 'Your fear of doing things' you
don't want to do and realize that the fear is
often far worse than any possible negative
results.
N
"Never leave that till tomorrow which you
can do today. -Benjamin Franklin

5. Breaking down tasks
- Break goals down into their
components so that you can accomplish
them one step at a time.
6. Persevering
- Inevitably, things will not always run
smoothly as you progress towards your
goals. When things are not working out,
you need to persevere and learn how to
take a positive attitude towards frustration
and failure.

Managing One's Time Effectively

7. Organizing your time
- Identify areas of your life where you
are wasting time and try to reduce these.
A good way to do this is to log everything
you do for a week in meticulous detail and
then examine your record to see how you
use (or misuse!) your time.

Managing One's Time Effectively

8. Revising for Examinations
- Have a regular venue for revision
such as the library where you are free
from distractions. You should after a while
become conditioned to starting work
immediately in this location. Plan out a
revision schedule or timetable so you
devote enough time to each subject.

Managing One's Time Effectively

Well done is better than well said.
Benjamin Franklin or to paraphrase this in
modern terms,
"Don't talk the talk, instead walk the
walk". Some people constantly talk
about the things they are going to do
but then keep procrastinating. Take
action if you wish to get results.

Growing as a Leader
WHAT IS A LEADER?
Definition of a Leader
- A leader is "a person who influences a
group of people towards the achievement
of a goal". A mnemonic for this definition
would be 3P's - Person, People and
Purpose.

Growing as a Leader

Growing as a Leader
3P'S
1. PERSON

- Is leadership a position of office or authority? Or, is

leadership an ability in the sense that he is a leader because
he leads? We all may know or hear of people who are in
positions of leadership but who are not providing leadership. A
position of office is no guarantee of leadership but it helps in
the sense that a leadership position usually commands a
listening ear from its people and that is a good starting point
for anyone who desires to be a leader.
-A leader by its meaning is one who goes first and leads by
example, so that others are motivated to follow him. This is a
basic requirement. To be a leader, a person must have a deeprooted commitment to the goal that he will strive to achieve it
even if nobody follows him!

Growing as a Leader
2. PURPOSE
- A requirement for leadership is personal vision
- the ability to visualize your goal as an
accomplished fact; a thing already achieved.
- "The very essence of leadership is that you
have to have vision. You can't blow an uncertain
trumpet." - Theodore M. Hesburgh
How do you become a leader with a purpose?
You need guidance (Prov 3:5-6) and you will get it
through meditation on the Word of God.

3. PEOPLE
- To be a leader, one must have followers. To
have followers, one must have their trust. How
do you win their trust? Why would others trust
you? Most important, are you worthy of their
trust?
Why are some individuals more effective than
others at influencing people?
Effectiveness in leadership has been attributed to
(1) persuasion skills, (2) leadership styles and
(3) personal attributes of the leader.
