Biography – Satyajit Ray

•Satyajit Ray – a director, producer,


screenwriter, composer, writer and graphic
designer.

•Born on May 2nd 1921

•Ray family embraced Brahmo Samaj within


hindu society
• In his school days Satyajit started getting
interested in films and was also fond of
western classical music

• 1936 – he joined college where he spent


most of his energy in two interests :
watching films and listening to western
classical music

• 1940 – joined Vishva Bharti University at


Shantiniketan
• At Shantiniketan - exposed to various
forms of Indian art

• Helped him to pay attention to the use of


smaller details with bigger meaning

• He left shantiniketan in 1942

• 1943 – joined an advertising agency


D.J.Keymer as a junior visualiser
• While working there, D.K.Gupta (a senior)
asked him to illustrate the abridged
version of Pather Panchali

• 1947 – ray co-founded Calcutta Film

• Ray , then started generating interest in


writing screenplays
• 1949 – Ray met Jean Renior, he advised
him to become a film maker

• 1950 – went to London, here he say the


film bicycle thieves

• 1950 – started working on Pather Panchali

• 1955 – Pather Panchali was released and


was a huge success

• Aparijito – his second film won the Golden


Lion award in Venice
• 1961 – decided to revive Sandesh( a
magazine founded by his grandfather)

• 1981 – made a feature film every year

• After 40 years of filmmaking his work was


interrupted by fragile health

• 1992 - Satyajit Ray won a lifetime


achievement Oscar and Bharat Ratna award
• Died on April 23rd 1992
