Purpose of using literature in the

language classroom:

Language development (can be used in various forms of writing)

Social/ moral development (contact with thought, feeling and experience of

peoples; lesson that life is not a simple process)

Aesthetic development (Encourage thinking about the art)

Why we used literature in the

classroom?
Literature opens a new world to the students. it cultivates the
critical abilities of the students. it encompasses every human
dilemma, conflict and yearning unravelling the plot of a short
story or decoding the dialogue of a play and is more than a
mechanical exercise. it demands a personal response from
the learners and encourages them draw on their own
experiences.

Why we used literature in the

classroom?
1.The focus of literature teaching is to make the students comprehend the
meaning that the author tries to express and explain at the same time to expand
their thinking and language abilities.
2. Students can learn the four skills, namely reading, writing, speaking, and
listening and this can be learnt because of literary, cultural, higher-order
thinking and motivational benefits. Through a piece of literary work a learner
can get the chance to learn vocabulary, discover question answers, evaluate
evidence individually and in group discussion, grow analytical power and learn
many grammatical aspects.

Activities: Reading the text:

While teaching the text the concerned teacher can discuss the
four reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, predicting and inferring.
Simultaneously, here the teacher can make the learners read aloud from different
parts of the text at the same time can share with the students views, ideas and
feedbacks. The teacher can also make the students relate their own experience with
the text and thus discuss. Students thus can share their views with each others and
this can for sure develop their interpretive abilities. The purpose of these strategies
is to incorporate improvement in language fluency and ensure the critical thinking
abilities of the learners.

Improving writing skills

Students can also write their comments regarding how the enjoyed the literary
piece ,which part of the text they liked most, which character appealed most to
them and why etc. Through all these techniques a student can nurture his or her
creative and imaginative faculty as well.

Enriching vocabulary
To increase the word power of the students the teacher may help giving the
meaning of certain words from the text and encourage the students to make
sentences with them.

Teaching Grammar:
In a language class, if for example preposition is taught its application can be
more extensive and powerful, if it can be shown how the prepositions are used in
that particular story. Thus the practice becomes more useful and it leaves a
strong imprint on the mind of the language learners.
