Introduction to Fleet Maintenance

Introduction.
The importance of equipment/fleet maintenance
particularly in the defence services, having increasing
numbers of complex and sophisticated vehicles and
weapon systems, needs no emphasis.
Equipment management encompasses all activities
commencing from concept formulation, right through
various phases of design, development, trials,
acceptance, production, usage and ultimate discard i.e.
from womb to tomb.

Overview of Maintenance Management

The responsibility of Maintenance Management involves

planning, directing, coordinating, guiding, allocating,
budgeting, maintaining, economizing and evaluating
products, services, or any machineries.
Maintenance management is an integral part of equipment
management activity which starts at design root level and is
an on-going process till the equipment is declared obsolete
and phased out of the organization.
Cost effectiveness and functionality to be kept in mind while
working out maintenance throughout the life cycle of the
equipment.
Maintenance activity should keep pace with latest
technology and sophistication.

Equipment management in defence services ensures

that The right equipment is in the Right Place,

at the Right Time, in Right Quantity, in the Right

Condition and at Right Cost.

The efficient and effective control of equipment, of its

To increase functional reliability of

production facilities.
To enable desired quality through correctly
adjusted, serviced and operated
equipment.
To maximize the useful life of equipment.
To minimize cost of production.

Objectives of Maintenance Agency

To ensure high availability of equipment

To ensure operational readiness of all equipment at all

times

To ensure the safety of personnel using the equipment

To extend the useful life of weapons and equipment.

To keep the number of breakdowns per year at its

lowest

To keep the yearly downtime at its lowest

Achieving all the above objectives at the lowest cost.

FMM and Human Body as Machinery

Human body is also a machine and carries out the

assigned job of each department in a well timed manner.
Each faculty is communicating to other when required
with out any external prompting
It maintains each part automatically
It detect any shortcoming in any part automatically
It feeds each parts requirement automatically
It self manages the maintenance
Coordination between various parts are automatic

Human body has a built-in management system

FMM and Human Body as Machinery

The equipment/vehicle is like a child.

Cannot communicate.
Cannot diagnose.
Cannot feed himself.
Cannot co-ordinate his own activities.

The equipment managers have to play following

role: A mother of the child.
A father of the child.
A doctor (pediatrician)
