SEMINAR ON

UTILISATION OF
WASTE PLASTIC IN
BITUMINOUS MIXES FOR
ROAD CONSTRUCTION

PRESENTED BY : SHIVA KUMAR.M.J

GUIDED BY : G.SRINIVASA RAJU
INTRODUCTION
 WASTE PLASTICS-AS BINDER
AND MODIFIER:-
 Waste plastics on heating soften
at around 130°C. The softened
plastics have a binding property.
Hence, the molten plastics materials
can be used as a binder and/or they
can be mixed with binder like
bitumen to enhance their binding
property. This may be a good
modifier for the bitumen, used for
NEED FOR THE STUDY
vPlastic is non-
biodegradable.
vDisposal of waste plastic is a
major problem.
vBurning of waste plastic
causes environmental
pollution.
vPlastic block drains and cause
CONTI…..

vWaste plastic can be used as a

binder in bituminous road
construction when it is melted.
vA better road with the use of
waste plastic.
vA better solution for the plastic
waste disposal problem.

CONCEPT
ØThe Concept of Utilization of
Waste Plastic in Bituminous
Mixes for Road Construction has
been done since 1997 in India.
ØOne such technology is reviewed
below,
ØThe technology is called
Bangalore’s KK process.
BANGALORE’S KK PROCESS
ØBangalore-based firm, K K Poly-
flex and a team of chemical
engineers from R V College of
Engineering, Bangalore, have
developed a way of using plastic
waste for road construction.
ØAn initial study was conducted in
1997 by the team to test for
strength and durability and
further research was done by
transportation dept of Bangalore
Conti….
In practice, such a “plastic road”
laid in Bangalore (at the
Rajarajeshwari Junction) in
March 2001.
showed superior smoothness and
uniformity and less rutting.
the process was also approved in
2003 by the Central Road
Research Institute, Delhi.
This process got patent from
Govt of India.
MATERIALS USED:-
1)AGGREGATE:-

20mm,10mm
aggregate,
 Stone dust.

2)BITUMEN:-
 60/70 grade
bitumen.

3)WASTE PLASTIC:- Waste plastic in

 shredded form

PROCESSING DETAILS:
1) collection of waste plastic
2) cleaning and shredding of
waste plastic
3) mixing of shredded waste
plastic, aggregate and
bitumen in central mixing
plant
4) laying of bituminous mix

1>COLLECTION OF WASTE
PLASTIC
 collected from roads, garbage
trucks,
 compost plants and by purchase

 from rag-pickers.
2>CLEANING AND SHREDDING

 de-dusted, cleaned if  smaller size using

 necessary.  shredding machine.

3>MIXING OF WASTE PLASTIC,
AGGREGATE AND BITUMEN IN
CENTRAL MIXING PLANT:-

The aggregate mix is heated to

1650c (as per the HRS
specification) in central mixing
plant.
Similarly 4.6%of bitumen to the
weight of mix is to be heated up
to 160ºc separately.

The 8% of waste plastic to the
weight of bitumen are added in
the conveyor belt &heated
bitumen is also sprayed

ce n tra l m ix in g p la n t
4>LAYING OF BITUMINOUS
MIX
The road laying temperature is
between 1100c to 1200c. The
roller used is 8-ton capacity.

METHODOLOGIES:-
Ø MIX DESIGN BY MARSHALL
TEST

1)Optimum Waste Plastic Content

Ø PERFORMANCE STUDIES OF
WASTE PLASTIC BITUMINOUS
MIX

1) INDIRECT TENSILE STRENGTH

2) RUTTING TEST
MARSHALL TEST
 The shredded plastic was
heated with bitumen in different
proportions (ranging from 0% to
12 % by weight of bitumen) and
mixed well by hand, to obtain the
modified bitumen and it is tested
for different properties.
 The properties of the modified
bitumen were compared with
ordinary bitumen.
OPTIMUM WASTE PLASTIC
CONTENT
Ø The Optimum Waste Plastic
Content fulfilling the Marshall
Mix design criteria was found to
be 8% of waste plastic to the
weight of bitumen.

Ø The average Marshall Stability

Value (MSV) of the mix was
found to be as high as 1750 kg.
PERFORMANCE STUDIES OF
WASTE PLASTIC
BITUMINOUS MIX
1.INDIRECT TENSILE STRENGTH:-

Tensile strength of
 the Waste Plastic
 Bituminous Mixes
 is greater then
 Conventional Mix

2.RUTTING TEST:- A groove made
by the passage of vehicles.

 Ordinary mix waste plastic mix

Conti……
 No traces of stripping even
after 20,000 cycles therefore No
pothole formation, no rutting has
been observed after 5 to 6 years
after construction.

ADVANTAGES

1)Stronger road with increased

Marshall Stability Value
2)Increase binding and better
bonding of the mix.
3)The strength of the road is
increased by 100%.
4)Better resistance towards rain
water.

Conti…..
5)The maintenance cost of road is
almost nil.
6)For 1km X 3.75m road, 1 ton of
plastic (10 lakh carry bags) is
used and 1 ton of bitumen is
saved.
7)The cost of road construction is
also less.
8)Disposal of waste plastic will no
longer be a problem.

WASTE PLASTIC ROADS
CONSTRUCTED:-

 The Bruhat Bengaluru

Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has
used plastic on about 600 km of
roads, including arterial roads.
 The plastic model was
successful on major roads in
Bangalore, including Shankar Mutt
Road, K H Road and other roads

Circle)
CONCLUSION:-
ØThe use of the innovative
technology not only
strengthened the road
construction but also increased
the road life as well as will help
to improve the environment.
Øone of the best methods for easy
disposal of waste plastics.
ØIn future we will have strong,
durable and eco-friendly roads.
