x-ACP Overview
Software functional modules

Automatic Cell Planning module: Used to automatically select parameters

leading to the optimal RF performance of GSM and/or UMTS wireless
networks. Optimal performance is defined in terms of a cost function. Cost
function is driven by user-tunable weights and penalizes lack of coverage,
interference, excessive capacity and uplink/downlink traffic quality (UMTS
only). Optimized parameters include:
Transmitted power
Antenna model
Electrical antenna tilt
Mechanical antenna tilt
Antenna radiation direction (azimuth)
Antenna radiation center height
Site Selection module: Used to identify sites that are redundant in the
current network. Redundancy can be evaluated based on two criteria:
Allowed degradation from the baseline network: Flag sites for removal
as long as percent of area or traffic that would lose coverage as a result
of site removal is below allowed degradation.
Target percentage service level: Flag sites for removal as long as
percent of area or traffic covered is above target after site removal.
Target percentage can be set globally or enforced per clutter type.

Now that we have all the Prediction loaded into the X-ACP
application, lets display the RSSI and see how it looks:

Select GSM 1900 BAND

from the Measured /
Predictions Data Filter

In the View Mode Tree select

RF>Predictions Only>RSSI
to view the RSSI

Look for sector(s) that do not

have RSSI, if so check & see
if the predictions are there,
perhaps the PL mapping file
is missing few sectors.

24

x-ACP - Optimization
Data Verification - Traffic

Check traffic distribution looks reasonable and correlates with the

input data (forecast data used to generated the demand grid, Atoll
traffic map)

25

Data Verification Drive Test Data

Now that we have all the Drive test loaded into the X-ACP
application, lets display the RSSI and see how it looks:

Select GSM 1900 BAND

from the Measured /
Predictions Data Filter

Look for sector(s) that do not

have Drive test data, if so
check & see if the Drive test
are there, perhaps the BSIC
mapping between the project
and the drive test data file is
missing or wrong.

In the View Mode Tree select

RF>Drive Measurements /
Predictions > Measurements
Only>RSSI to view the RSSI

26

x-ACP - Optimization
Data Verification Using Pivot Tables

Imported project data can also be viewed using Pivot Tables

Pivot Tables are very flexible and powerful, the user can customize these
as needed (The data can be sorted in many different ways)
These tables can be exported and saved in csv, Excel, Word and html
file formats

27

x-ACP - Optimization
Data Verification Pixel confidence report

This analysis creates a set of text files containing statistics of the

predictions/measurements comparison at sector and pixel levels.
Four files are created as part of the pixel confidence calculation:
List of sectors with no associated predictions
List of sectors with no associated measurements
Difference between prediction and measurement per pixel (Pixel
confidence)
Mean difference between predictions and measurements and standard
deviation per sector (Sector confidence)

Within the Pixel Confidence reports, users

should look for large differences (more than
5dB may be suspicious) between predictions
and measurements and large standard
deviation (more than 10dB indicates a large
spread).

Setting Clutter Attributes

Use OLAP Coverage View to Assess Percentages of Each
Clutter Type.
Carefully Consider Clutter Weights and Thresholds According to
These Percentages and Market Specifics.

31

x-ACP - Optimization
Configuration - Clutter Attributes
Setting Clutter Attributes
If Traffic per Sector Imported via Import-Network Consolidation Data-Traffic
Forecast is Used, Clutter Weights are Used to Distribute Traffic Amongst BestServed Pixels for Each Sector.
Higher Weighted Pixels are Assigned a Larger Percentage of the Traffic.
Pixels Are Considered to Be Covered if Best Server >= Threshold Setting for
That Clutter Type
Clutter Weights Should NOT Differ by More Than One Order of Magnitude
Clutter Types That Comprise 25% or More of the Total Should Be One Value
Less than Low Density Residential
Clutter Types That Comprise 30% or More of the Total Should Match the Weight
of Low Density Residential
The weights are relative values (unit less).
A value of 1 for all is the same as a value
of 1 for all. What is important is the relative
difference between these weights.

32

x-ACP - Optimization
Configuration - Parameters
Parameters that can be optimized are available in the Physical tab:
1. Each optimizable parameter has a
button next to it.
2. In this window, the user can set optimizable parameter on a per sector basis.

By default, all the optimizable

parameters are set to be optimized
for all the sectors. The Optimize this
variable is checked

As a first step, select all the sectors in the network.

Next, go to each optimizable parameter and uncheck the Optimize this variable box.
Click on Apply when done. This will ensure that none of sectors in the project can be
optimized (next slide shows how to set optimizable parameters on a per group basis)

33

x-ACP - Optimization
Configuration - Parameters
In this example, these sites selected the Antenna type and Azimuth are
optimizables. It means, each sector can be optimizable with different
parameters.
Only these three antenna
types will be considered
during the optimization
process for the selected
sites

The increment is
vendor specific

OPTIMIZATION

36

x-ACP - Optimization
Running the Optimizer - ACP Tab
After configuring the optimizable parameters on a per sector basis, we are now ready to set
these parameters on a network wide basis. (In the ACP Tab as shown below)

- RF Parameters to optimize:
Antenna Type, Mechanical Tilt,
Azimuth, and Power
In addition to RF parameters, the
optimizer considers the available budget
and costs of various modifications
Objective function is a combination of RF
and budget costs
Budget may be overwritten by entering
large budget limit and uniform individual
budget items

More iterations for statistical validity

(for initial testing use lower numbers to get a
feeling of how long it takes)
Click on Apply and go to
the Objective Tab next
37

100% sampling will analyze all the

pixels. Reducing this to a smaller %
will speed up the optimization;
however, it may compromise the
optimization results

x-ACP - Optimization
Running the Optimizer - Objective Tab
Allows weighting among relative importance given to coverage, capacity and quality
Facilitates inclusion of population, clutter and traffic data

Checking on the Clutter box allows the

optimizer to prioritize pixels in different clutter
types based on the Clutter weightings (as set
in Edit\Clutter Attributes)
Checking on the Traffic box allows the
optimizer to prioritize pixels based on the
traffic distribution. Pick the correct traffic
grid from the drop-down list

The weights are relative values (unit less). A

value of 100 for all is the same as a value of
10 for all. What is important is the relative
difference between these weights.
Click OK when ready

38

x-ACP - Optimization
Running the Optimizer - Summary

The optimizer provides the following summary of the current

scenario

(Please, verify this info with your desired optimization goals)

Does the count match

with what it should be?

39

x-ACP - Optimization
Running the Optimizer - Status

Here, the user can monitor changes in RF costs, monetary

costs, and the percentage of covered and good quality pixels.

While the optimizer is running, compare the following:

1.

Initial Cost with the Current Cost and the Best Cost.
The lower the cost the better it is.

2.

Percentages: Improvement from Initial values to the

current values.

3.

Dollar Cost: Current dollar cost should be zero for all

parameters. This cost will increase with each change in
parameter values
(as set in the RF Tab of the optimization window)

Click on Start to initiate the optimization process

40

x-ACP - Optimization
Running the Optimizer - Progress
The optimizer stops after finishing the user-defined number of iterations,
alternatively the user also has the option to click on Pause to stop the
optimizer at any time.
Q: How many iterations should I run? (when can I stop the optimizer)
The number of iterations needed for each project will vary depending on
many factors (# of parameters to be optimized, # and location of sectors,
etc.). Initially, you can start with a relatively lower number such as 5 or
10. When the optimizer is running, try to look at the relative
improvement from one iteration to the next.
The idea is to note the improvement as the optimization proceeds. At
some point, you will start seeing that more iterations are not helping in
providing more improvement. At that point, you may choose to stop the
optimizer. So, even if you have started the optimizer with 100 iteration to
be done, no worries, just stop it as needed.
Clicking on Pause stops the optimizer and gives the following three options:

Resume: Start optimization from where it was paused.

Commit Changes: Accept, save the optimization results, and exit the
optimizer.
Cancel: Ignore the optimization results and exit the optimizer.
41

x-ACP - Optimization
Running the Optimizer - Progress
Please, note the following regarding clicking on Pause in the
ACP Optimization Window
1.

2.

It may take a little while before the optimizer actually stops. The
optimizer needs some time to finish the iteration it is in at that
moment.
You may get a Not Responding message in the top portion your
window. Many times, this is just a temporary stage. If you wait for
some time, the application should respond.

Upon completion of the Optimization run (either by completing all

iterations or when pausing and clicking on OK), the optimizer
saves all the changes in the appropriate project files. Depending
on the number of changes, it may take a little time to save these
changes. Again, the user may get a Not Responding
message if multiple mouse-clicks are utilized in the due process.

42

x-ACP - Optimization
Running the Optimizer - Progress
Make sure to Save your project after accepting the optimization results.
In summary, follow these steps once the optimization stops:

NOTE: The user may not get this window if the optimizer was
manually stopped (by clicking on Pause) before finishing all of the
iterations. In that case, skip Step1 and proceed to Step2.

Site Selection Reports
Once Site Selection is run, a new folder is created containing specific reports for the different SS
scenarios
Scenario_name.InfoReport.TechBand.csv - This file contains information regarding the
optimization settings. These include:
Percentage Coverage Change or Service Level defined by the user.
Coverage Weight (hard coded)
Anchor Weight
Weight by Clutter Setting
Weight by Traffic Setting
Weight by Population Setting
Traffic Used (This will be blank if a demand grid is employed)
Scenario_name.Offloads.TechBand.csv - This file contains information regarding traffic
offloading. There are three columns:
New Relief Sector - The sector which absorbed the traffic.
Existing Offloaded Sector - The sector from which the traffic was offloaded.
Offloaded Erlang Percentage - The % of the starting erlangs that were offloaded from the
Existing Offloaded Sector to the New Relief Sector

Site Selection Reports
Scenario_name.Relief.TechBand.csv - This file contains information to be used by Optimi's VCF
Forecasting Tool.
Scenario_name.SelectSiteReport.TechBand.csv - This file contains information regarding the
sites that were selected for decommission. The columns include:
Cell ID - The ID of the site selected for decommission.
Erlang - The number of erlangs the site was serving.
Number of Pixels Served - The number of pixels the site served at or above the threshold used
for prediction/drive measured data import (typically -105 dBm).
Number of Pixels Covered - The number of pixels the site covered at or above the coverage
threshold defined for the clutter type.
Number of Pixels Lost Coverage - The number of pixels whose best server fell below the
coverage threshold (within the default polygon defined in Tools-Options) defined by the user for
the clutter type as a result of the site's decommissioning.
Percentage of Coverage Lost - The percentage of this sites coverage that was lost. This is
NOT and indicator of network coverage lost.
Decommission Erlang - The number of erlangs that are no longer served as a result of this
site's decommissioning (erlangs on pixels no longer served at all).
Coverage Score - The coverage score for the site. This is the total number of pixels that lost
coverage (within the entire project) divided by the total number of pixels covered in the project.

Site Selection Reports
After SS, and once the sectors proposed for removal have been
deleted, the distribution of traffic has changed. This has to be
analyzed carefully in order to make sure that every existing site can
accomplish with the new distribution. There is one utility Update
Traffic Erlangs which updates traffic per sector according to the
new scenario
