Cause of Breakage of Grinding wheel

NEVER MOUNT A DAMAGED GRINDING WHEEL.

DONT GRIND MATERIAL FOR WHICH THE WHEEL IS NOT
DESIGNED.
NEVER MOUNT A GRINDING WHEEL ON A MACHINE NOT
DESIGNED AND GUARDED FOR THAT GRINDING WHEEL.
NEVER OVERSPEED A GRINDING WHEEL.
FAILURE TO PROPERLY MAINTAIN A GRINDING MACHINE
CAN CAUSE GRINDING WHEEL BREAKAGES RESULTING
IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
IMPROPER MOUNTING OF GRINDING WHEELS.
ALL GRINDING WHEELS CAN BE BROKEN IF NOT USED
PROPERLY.
IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE A GRINDING WHEEL
OR THE GRINDER, GET HELP!

Jamming the work into the grinding

wheel.
Force grinding, so that the motor slows
noticeably or the work gets hot.
Grinding on the wrong surface of a
grinding wheel, i.e. grinding on the side
of a Type 1 or straight grinding wheel.

Handling
Grinding wheels are fragile and sensitive
to impacts and shocks. Be aware of this
when you handle them.

Transport
The grinding wheels must be handled with
care during transportation.

Storage
Grinding wheels shall be stored in such a
manner that mechanical damage is avoided and
that they are not subjected to damaging
environment.
Store in dry, frost free conditions in special
racks or containers.
Store in moderate and constant temperature.
Use the wheels held in stock longest first.

Marking
Use only wheels, which are properly labeled. Read the
marking and obey the instructions for use.

Ring Test
Cracked wheels can be identified by doing ring test. To
perform the ring test, wheels should be tapped gently
with a light non-metallic implement, such as the handle
of a screwdriver for light wheels, or a wooden mallet for
heavier wheels. Clear Ringing sound indicates the wheel
is free from cracks. Dead sound indicates presence of
cracks. Such wheels should not be mounted on the
machines.

Wheel Guard
Before starting the cutting-off or grinding operation, the
wheel guard must be in position and fixed securely.

Other protection
Depending upon the grinding
protection has to be used such as:

process,

suitable

Ear muffs or equivalent

Gloves (in case of Bench Grinding machine hand gloves should not be

used.)

Dust mask

Leather apron or safety clothes

Head cover

Protection of the work place

Hand held grinders should be used in such a manner
that sparks fly away from the operator's body or any
flammable material.

Stopping the machine

Switch off the machine and allows the wheel to stop
completely before placing it on a bench or on the
floor.

Selection of grinding wheel

Select the proper grinding wheel and machine for the job.
Visually inspect all grinding wheels. Also, the use of ring testing or vibration testing
is required for many grinding wheels.
NEVER USE A DAMAGED GRINDING WHEEL.
Check the machine speed against the maximum operating speed of the grinding wheel.
Inspect the machine and its guards.
NEVER USE A DAMAGED MACHINE.
Do not force a grinding wheel onto the mounting arbor. If the wheel does not fit, dont
use it.
Dont over-tighten the mounting nut or mounting screws. Tighten flanges just enough to
prevent wheel slippage.
Wear all required personal protective equipment.
Allow the grinding wheel to run at operating speed for one full minute before using the
grinding wheel.
Do not allow anyone to stand in front of or in line with the grinding wheel during this test

Selection of grinding Machine

Select the proper grinding wheel and machine for the job.
Lock out and tag all machines before working on them.
Disconnect portable machines from their power source before changing the grinding wheel.
Check the machine speed against the maximum operating speed of the grinding wheel. The
speed of the grinding wheel must be equal to or greater than the machines speed.
Inspect the machine and its guards. Check the machines speed with a tachometer before
mounting grinding wheels.
Clean arbor and flanges before mounting a grinding wheel.
Check the mounting flanges for proper type, size, and flange condition. NEVER USE
MISMATCHED, UNDERSIZE, DIRTY OR DAMAGED FLANGES.
Use only machines designed and guarded for the grinding wheel you are using.
Use proper mounting blotters when required or supplied by the manufacturer.
Do not reuse blotters and use only one blotter for each side of the wheel.
Care must be taken to ensure that all blotters are not allowed to bunch up or fold over
and do not get caught inside the wheels hole.
Replace all guards and reset the machine to accommodate the new grinding wheel.

ELECTRICAL
SAFEGUARDING
CABLES!!!!!!
LOOSE LYING CABLES CAN CAUSE
A TRIPPING HAZARD
ELECTROCUTION
THEY ARE UNTIDY

DO NOT OVERLOAD SOCKETS.

IF A MACHINE TRIP OR AN ELECTRICAL CABLE
BECOME WARM TO THE TOUCH, IT MUST BE
DISCONNECTED AND REPORTED WIHTOUT
DELAY

ELECTRICAL
SAFEGUARDING
DO NOT USE TAPED JOINTS TO CONNECT CABLES SINCE
THEY DONT HAVE SUFFICIENT INSULATION OR
PROTECTION FROM LIQUIDS.
DO CARRY OUT YOUR OWN VISUAL INSPECTIONS OF PLUGS
AND LEADS AND GET THEM REPAIRED AS NECESSARY.
LOOK OUT FOR:
PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE CABLE
DAMAGE TO THE PLUGS
INSECURE CONNECTIONS TO THE PLUG
DO SWITCH OFF EQUIPMENT BEFORE UNPLUGGING AND
BEFORE CLEANING

SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS

PREVENT THEM BY REMEMBERING THE
FOLLOWING:
DO NOT ALLOW CABLING TO CREATE A
TRIPPING HAZARD
CLEAR UP SPILLAGES QUICKLY
DO NOT BLOCK PASSAGEWAYS
KEEP WORKING AREAS CLEAN
WATCH OUT FOR:
CHIPPED FLOORBOARDS AND TILES
WATCH WHERE YOU WALK!

Check Points

Do side guards cover the spindle, nut and flange and 75% of the wheel diameter?
