Introduction:
Bearing materials are special type of materials
which carry a moving or rotating component with
least friction & wear.
Material must be soft with extremely low shear
strength as well as it must be strong enough to
support heavy dynamic loads.
In present investigation we have tested various
types of composite polymer material such as Pure
PTFE, 25%bronze filled PTFE, 25% glass filled
PTFE.

PTFE composites are technically

suspensor and economically cheaper
friction material as compared to
conventional bearing materials.
These are superior because of the
following properties,
1.Higher tensile strength.
2.Lower specific weight.
3.Easy machine ability.
4.Longer life.

Problem Definition & Objectives

to suggest a suitable material for various
applications like printing press machine
bearing, Xerox machine bearing by
considering following points
Study of friction behavior of various types
of bearing materials.
Study of wear of various types of bearing
materials under condition of load.
Comparison of Wear rate of various types
of bearing materials.

Scope For The Present

Investigation
Practically in all cases a plain bearing
material is a non-ferrous alloy or a
mixture.
With the development of engineering
industries, the amount of bearing
material increasing at very fast
Most common type of 'bushing' and
'bearing' materials has either been
bronze, copper and lead mixture and lead
or tin based white metals.
6/16/15
As such, bearing industries consume

large qty. of Copper, Lead, Tin, Indium,

some of these materials are not available

or not produced in India or produced
negligibly in small qty
These considerations lead the
Metallurgists to search for alternative
bearing material with special attention to
metal which are more easily available
both at time of emergency and in normal
times.
extensive research has been carried out
in various countries for the development
of composite polymer materials like PTFE
and PTFE with Carbon, Bronze, and Glass
etc.

Need Importance & Aim

Among the bearing materials presently in white metal,
vogues, bronze (gun metal), etc. are extensively used
in sugar, chemical, cement, pharmaceutical and
automobile industries as they exhibit excellent load
bearing capacity and corrosion resistance.
However this material containing 88% Cu, 10% Sn
and2
Material is highly expensive.
The oil retaining capacity of the material is very low
due to absence of inherent porosity.
It exhibits a tendency stick to the journal at high
temperatures.
It fails to function satisfactorily at higher loads and
speeds% Zn suffers from following serious drawbacks:
6/16/15

Against this background, the present

research work is aimed at developing a
new
bearing material, which is known as
super bush bearing material, which
consists of
Carbon filled; PTFE Glass filled PTFE
It is cost effective and superior in
properties to the conventional bronze
bearing materials
Fruitful research in this area could lead to
development of superior and less
expensive bearing materials

Friction & Wear

Wear is generally divided into five
major categories:
(1) Adhesion
(2) Abrasion
(3) Surface fatigue
(4) Erosion
(5) Corrosion

6/16/15

10

ADHESION: Adhesion is the result of the direct contact of

bearing metals. When the applied load is
sufficient to rupture any protective surface film
(oxides, etc.), the contacting asperities deform
elastically, then plastically.
ABRASION: Abrasion results whenever a hard material slides
against a soft one, and may be visualized best as
plugging.
SURFACE FATIGUE: When bearing surfaces contact each other in
rolling motion, after a relatively
large number of cycles the result may be surface
fatigue, a condition evidenced by
localized pitting or flaking
6/16/15

11

EROSION: Erosion is the removal of surface material

by the impingement of fluids and/or
solids, as in liquid-abrasive blasting
CORROSION: Corrosive wear is the removal of surface
material by chemical action, or by a
combination of chemical action and
relative motion

Experimental Methodology
I am going to analyze wear and friction
characteristics of bearing material with the help of
"WEAR TESTING MACHINE
Purpose of this machine is to study the following:1.Study of friction behavior of various types of
bearing materials.
2. Study of wear of various types of bearing materials
under condition of load.
3. Study of basic laws of friction and wear

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Graph of Wear Vs Time for different
materials.
Graph of COF Vs time for different
materials.
Comparisons of wear and coefficient of
friction for different materials .
From graph & reading we can prove that
wear is independent on area of contact.
