Course Synopsis
The basic modes of thermal energy transfer viz.,
conduction, convection and radiation are introduced with
emphasis on understanding the fundamental concepts to be
used in analysing and solving real-life problems. The
applicability of 1-D heat conduction in various geometries,
the validity of one dimensional heat conduction in fins, the
distinction between steady and unsteady states, the
concept of boundary layer, the analogy between fluid flow
and convective heat transfer, the distinction between free
and forced convection, the properties of materials which are
responsible for energy transfer by radiation, the principles
in the design of heat exchangers with emphasized on
fundamental concepts and design methods.
