INTRODUCTION
Sustainable development includes
questions about how human decisions
affect the Earth's environment
It integrates both the carrying capacity
of the ecosystem as well as the social
developments
Uncontrolled development as per the
need of the modern civilization goes
hand in hand with global environmental
devastation

DEFINITION
meeting the needs of the present
generation without compromising
the needs of the future generation
It is a process in which the
exploitation of resources, the
direction of investments, the
orientation of technological
development and the institutional
charges are all made consistent
with future as well as present needs

Resources
Renewable
Solar Power
Wind Power
Hydro Power
Nuclear power
Geo thermal
power

Non-renewable
Fossils fuels
Coal
Petrol
natural gas
Minerals

FACTS

Energy
In one year people on
earth use up the amount
of fossil fuel it took one
million years to produce
US only uses 17 million
barrels per day
90 % of energy comes
from fossils fuels
Hydro electricity
accounts 4% ,wind
power 1%

Cont
Water
There are 1.8 billion
people in the
developing world
(excluding China)
without access to
fresh water
Freshwater accounts
only 2.5% of earths
water

Cont..
Forest
In 1950, 10% of Earth's land
surface was covered by rain
forests. Now it is 6%
2.5 billion tons of carbon are
added to the atmosphere
12 million hectors of forest
are cleared annually
All tropical forest could be
lost by 2050

Cont..
Global Warming
Temperature in Alaska
have risen by some 4
degree over past 50
years
Earth is going to be
warmer by 5 to 7
degree by 2050
Melting glaciers- 150 in
mid 19th century,37 in
1968 and 27 by today

The situation today

Around 30 000 chemicals on the
commercial market
Around 2 800 substances are produced
in volumes more than 1 000 tons/year
Since 1993 around 5 substances in EU
has been completely been
investigated concerning risks for
humans and environment

Major roots of the

problems

Problems arising from the negative

effects of the process of development:
continuing demand generated by economically
advanced section of the community on countrys
natural resources

Problems arising from the conditions of

poverty and underdevelopment : It deals
with the impact of poverty on the availability of
natural resources of the Indian economy. The
problems particularly important among the rural poor
when such degradation affects soil fertility, quantity
and quality of water ,forests, wildlife and fisheries etc

Impacts of Some of the

Developmental
Activities on theMajor
Environment
Developmental Activities
Impacts on the
Environment
Forest Clearing and Land
Resettlement

Extinction of rare species of flora and fauna,

creation of condition for
mosquito breeding leading to infectious
diseases such as malaria,
dengue etc.

Use of Pesticides

Pesticides used in agriculture sometimes go

into the food chain or in
water bodies that may result in harmful
health hazards.

Agro Industries

Large amount of highly polluting organic

wastes, surface water pollution

Timber Extraction

Degrades land, destroys surface oil,reduces

production potential of
future forests.

Urbanization and
Industrialization

Concentration of population in urban centers

makes huge demands on production in rural
areas and put pressures on land, air and
water
pollution.

Water Resource Projects e.g.

Dam Extensive Irrigation

Human settlement and resettlement, spread

of waterborne diseases,

Nuclear Threat
Nuclear
explosions
in
space
disabled
distant
satellites
Many species of plants
and
animals
would
become extinct.
Carrying of dust and soot
from the northern to the
southern hemisphere
The solar ultraviolet flux
would be much larger than
its present value
It
will
destroy
the
protective ozone layer

Deforestation
In India in the
year 2006 it has
been found that
nearly 7cr
tribal's and 20 cr
non tribal's are
dependent upon
forest

Water Pollution
Falling ground water
table
Soil loss
Net withdrawals
along their course
due to agricultural,
industrial and
municipal
Pollution from human
and animal wastes,
Agricultural run offs
and industrial
effluents.

Population Explosion
Poverty
More greenhouse gases
Prices of goods will
increase
Loss of natural
environments

resources
Solid wastes (organic and
inorganic waste)
Less employment
