Introduction
Generally in civil engineering the extra weight is.undesired
Ensure the safety against sliding or overturning of the.special structure ( Stability )
.Radiation shielding-

Definition
.Heavyweight
.

high density-

Density more than 2600 kg/ M3-

.Resistance to extreme weather.Heavyweight aggregate ( density more than 3000 kg/ M3 )-

Components
Cement
Water
Heavyweight aggregate
Admixtures

Cement
.The same cement in normal concrete. It is better to use low hydration heat cement-

Water

.Low water to cement ratio.Less air voids-

Heavyweight aggregate
.density more than 3000 kg/ M3- 1
.abrasion resistance- 2

.of the concretes weight) % 90 70(- 3

.particle size less than 2.36 cm - 4

a) Natural Aggregate :

Ilmenite , hematite, magnetite, goethite and limonite,. Barite

Ilmenite

hematite

magnetite

goethite

b) Industrial Waste Aggregate :

.Scrap iron, steel punching, iron shot and ball bearings-

Admixtures

- improve the placeability and reduce the tendency for

segregation.
- Air-entraining admixtures
low density .
- Fly ash is used to enhance the workability.
- An air- detraining agent is often helpful.

Production
.homogenous mixture

well-graded aggregates-

Prior to use, the steel punching should be washed in.alkaline solution, to remove all traces of oil and grease
Typical cement content is of the order of 400 kg/m3, and.with water-cement ratio of 0.4
. To avoid segregation , low mixing time-

Placement
In replacement the segregation is the most remarkable -
.problem
To avoid segregation we can use the prepacked -
. method (Preplaced-aggregate method)
.Should not be placed in layers of more than 30 cm thick .More density
more rigid framework . Applying vibration to gain high density concrete -

Properties

Uses
a) Radiation shield :

.Gamma ray and X ray.Electron high density.high hydrogen content for shielding neutrons.Concrete VS leadNuclear power plants, particle accelerators, research. reactors, laboratory hot cells and medical facilities

b) counterweights :

Because of its weight it can be used as counterweights. in the special structures that needs high weight blocks

Lift Bridge

Bascule Bridge

Tower Crane

c) Wave dissipating blocks:

. Tsunami resistance . Special shapes. Avoid displacement

heavy weight-

Conclusion
- Heavyweight concrete always is used when we feel need
to the extra weight in the structure .
- We can get a concrete with density between
( 3000 kg/ M3 - 6000 kg/ M3 ) and that according to the

heavyweight aggregate that is used in production .

- Different concrete mixes can have very different
attenuation characteristics, so the heavyweight concrete
should be designed according to the purpose of its
production .
