HISTOLOGY LABORATORY

Activity # 1 The Human Cells

SPECIFIC LEARNING
OUTCOMES (SLO)
Upon completion of this activity, students will be able to:

Identify the distinguishing characteristics of

each type of human cells
Enumerate the specific functions of each type of
human cells
Focus under the microscope each type of human
cells
Draw and label the parts of each type of human
cells

PROCEDURE
1. Properly focus the prepared slides of
organ or tissue under the microscope using
LPO and HPO and locate the specific type of
human cells listed below:
Epithelial Cells:
-Squamous cells (squamous epithelium or human
brown skin)
-Columnar cells (small intestine/jejunum)
-Cuboidal cells (kidney tubules)

PROCEDURE
1. Properly focus the prepared slides of
organ or tissue under the microscope and
locate the specific type of human cells
listed below:
Connective or Supporting Cells:
-Adipocytes/Fat cells (adipose tissue)
-Chondrocytes/Cartilage cells (hyaline cartilage of
the trachea)

PROCEDURE
1. Properly focus the prepared slides of
organ or tissue under the microscope and
locate the specific type of human cells listed
below:
Muscle Cells:
-Smooth muscle cells (stomach)
-Skeletal muscle cells (tongue)

PROCEDURE
1. Properly focus the prepared slides of
organ or tissue under the microscope and
locate the specific type of human cells listed
below:
Nerve Cells:
-Neuron (spinal cord smear or prepared slides of
cow nerve cells)
-Ganglion cells (spinal ganglion)

PROCEDURE
1. Properly focus the prepared slides of
organ or tissue under the microscope and
locate the specific type of human cells listed
below:
Blood Cells: Human Blood Smear
-Red blood cells/Erythrocytes
-White blood cells/Leukocytes
Neutrophil, Eosinophil, Basophil, Monocyte, Lymphocyte

-Platelets/Thrombocytes

PROCEDURE
1. Properly focus the prepared slides of
organ or tissue under the microscope and
locate the specific type of human cells listed
below:
Germ/Reproductive Cells:
-Spermatozoa/Sperm cells (seminiferous tubules of
the testis or human semen smear)
-Ovum/Egg cells (human ovary)

PROCEDURE
2. Draw, color and label fully the different
types
of
human
cells
as
seen
microscopically.
3. Below the drawing, write the functions of
each type of human cells. Describe also the
shape and form of each type of cells.

PROCEDURE
4. Answer the following review questions:
a.Define a cell.
b.Differentiate prokaryotic from eukaryotic cell.
c.What are the important functions of the cell?
d.What are the major parts/regions of the cell?
e.Enumerate the mitotic apparatus of the cell.
f.What is the difference between inclusions and cytoskeleton
of cell?

5. Submit the laboratory report sheets to

your professor at the end of the laboratory
period.
