INTRODUCTION

Recently a habitat of an endangered bird

species has been discovered near an existing
roadway
The roadway is a horizontal curve
Causing noise pollution to the habitat

INTRODUCTION

Original Design Criteria:

Radius

of 992ft
Superelevation of 9%
Normal-Crown Slope of 1%
Design Speed of 50 mph
2-lanes, each being 12 feet wide
A new local roadway is being planned which the
new curve must cross at the point where the
local road has a longitudinal grade of 4%

OBJECTIVES

Relocate 120ft away from the existing curve

Not altering the design speed of 50 mph
Keeping the PC point fixed
Find the location where 4% grade planned
road is going to cross the re-aligned road
Meet the AASHTO Green Book Requirements

Original Curve

Will the new radius allow design Speed of 50 mph?

DESIGN PROCEDURE

Calculate min radius required for 50 mph

Rmin = 725
Rnew (785) > Rmin (725)

So the new radius of 785 will allow us

maintain the design speed of 50 mph

DESIGN PROCEDURE

Calculating the new PT and PI Stations

Now, the length of the arc from

PI Station to PC Station,

La = 890
New PI Station = PC + Tnew
= (81+68) + 500
= 86+68
New PT Station = PC + La
= (81+68) + 890
= 90+58

CONCLUSION

The re-alignment calculation of the new

curve was determined and checked against
the minimum requirement as per the
AASHTO.
The deflection angles, chord lengths in half
station intervals were calculated and then
drawings were prepared accordingly.
The station number at the intersection of
new planned roadway was determined and is
shown in the drawing.
