About the Author
Michael Culliname is the associate director of
the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he also
teaches Southeast Asian History. He completed his
doctoral degree at the University of Michigan, and
has been conducting research and publishing on
Philippine history since the early 1970’s. During over
six years of residence in the Philippines, he has
taught history and political science at the University
of San Carlos in Cebu City and at De La Salle
University in Manila. Dr. Culliname has also served
as chair of the Philippine Studies Group and as of
the Southeast Asia Council of the Association for
