Not everyone can climb those stairs

Ronald Mace, an architect and

director of the Center for Universal
Design at North Carolina University
first coined the phrase Universal
Design. It referred to the concept of
simplifying life for everyone by
making products, communication
systems, and the "built
environment" more usable by more
people at little or no cost. Examples
are closed captioning on television,
curb cuts for wheel chair users,
baby strollers, dollies, and roller
skates.
But there are other ways to climb.

Students come in great varieties of ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Students have many types of learning styles, primarily visual or auditory.
Universal Design Learning increases access opportunities for everyone.
Teachers can
provide
methods with
viable
alternatives
for
those learners
who experience
difficulty
demonstrating
this
knowledge.

They can step away from traditional means

(e.g., writing a paper, completing a written examination)
and provide assistive technology to aid students in learning.
UDL therefore is not a single practice or method but a
framework that encompasses several existing methods
relevant to its principles for enhancing the learning process
for diverse learners.
It may be from another option.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

is an approach that addresses and redresses the
options to assist learning. http://www.udlcenter.org/advo
:
Regardless the diversity in your
classroom, UDL reaches and engages
maximum number of learners

UDL gives students greater access to information.

UDL gives students greater opportunities for achievement.

UDL gives greater satisfaction with the learning process.

Let learning in!

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) recognizes that every
learner is unique and processes information differently.

The brain distributes processing differently with beginner learners

versus
advance learners. Research has gained more understanding of this.

UDL Guidelines
are organized according to
3 main principles.

They address;

expression
representation

engagement

Some of you may be already building UDL options into your curriculum.
Universal Design Learning is a proactive process
of making learning accessible and skills attainable
regardless’
of learning style, physical or sensory abilities.

Representation
Teachers can provide projects that are performance based. They
may offer virtual exploration via a web cam. They may use digital
recorder and amplification for auditory disabilities.
