19th C gave birth to two

conflicting views of modernity
that have continued to compete
with each other.
One based on scientific
and material progress, which
arose out of the Enlightenment
with its belief in reason and
freedom, and is identified with
the middle class, and a radical

The life of out city is rich in

marvelous subjects. We are
enveloped and steeped as
though in an atmosphere of
the marvelous, but we do not
notice it. Like his fellow critic
had said that the modern
beauty is based on accepting
modern civilization as it is.
To do so, however, artists
must go against traditions and
rely on their own
imaginations,

douard Manet is the first
modernist painter, and that
modernism in art originated in
the 1860s.
