Handbook Formulation

Each person is unique. Such uniqueness has

to be recognized and celebrated.
Respect, active listening and openness are
some of the important conditions that
promote learning.
Adult learning and conditions that
encourage it, requires considerable selfawareness and communication skills.
Clarifying ones own personal motives and
expectations and practicing communicating
and listening skills will better prepare
participants to learn as much from this
training.

BUILDING GOOD RELATIONSHIPS

The most important single ingredient to the formula

of success is knowing how to get along with people.

Relationships make or break us.

If you want to be successful in life no matter
what goals you have, you must learn to develop
positive relationships with people.
Meet each person with positive anticipation and
expect every encounter to yield positive results.
Be considerate of peoples feelings.
Be a good listener.
Make every person you meet feel needed,
important and appreciated.
Treat everyone you meet as the most important
person on earth.

GUIDES IN EFFECTIVE
Stop talking.LISTENING
You cannot listen if youre talking.

Give every man thine ear, but few their voice.

Put the talker at ease. Help a person feel free to
talk. This often called a permissive environment or
establishing rapport.
Show the talker you want to listen. Do not read
your mail while someone talks. Listen to
understand rather than oppose.
Remove distractions. Dont doodle, tap or
shuffle papers. Will it be quieter if you shut the
door
Empathize with the talker. Try to help yourself
see the other persons point of view

6.

7.

8.

9.

10.

Be patient. Allow plenty of time. Do not interrupt

the talker. Dont start for the door or walk away.
Hold your temper. An angry person takes the
wrong meaning from words
Go easy on arguments and criticism. These put
people on the defensive, and they clam up or
become angry. Do not argue. Even if you win, you
lose.
Ask questions. This encourage a talker and
shows that you are listening. It helps to develop
point further.
Stop talking! This is you first and last, because all
other guides depend on it. You cannot do an
effective listening job while you are talking.

ON EFFECTIVE
LISTENING

Nature gave people two ears but only one

tongue, which is a gentle hint that they
should listen more than they talk
Listening requires two ears, one for
meaning and one for feeling.
Decision makers who do not listen have
less information for making sound
decisions.

KINDS OF LISTENERS

Evaluative keeps on evaluating

Marginal listen partially
Active participative
Non-listener physically
present/mentally absent
True Listener listen reflectively
