INTRODUCTION

For protection against antenna shifting and deflection due

to bad weather, 4,6,8,10 and 12 ft. (1.2, 1.8, 2.4, 3.0 and
3.7m) antennas contain one sway bar and 15 ft. (4.6m)
antennas have four sway bars.
RFS and Andrew Antennas were designed to withstand
wind speed of 200 km/hr (125mph), a simple bracing
strut option is available that improves this to 250 km/hr
(155mph).

INSTALLATION OF SIDE STRUT

To attain a maximum stability of the antenna system, mount the end

of the antenna side strut parallel as possible to the antenna direction.
However, if this could not be achieved, the deviation angle from the
parallel position should be not more than 25o in any direction.
Consider the offset of the antenna in order to position the side strut
according to the standard.

DISADVANTAGES

1) The antenna leaves away from the tower.

2) With the wrong offset, mounting of side strut become impossible to
attain that could cause instability of the antenna system when theres
wind pressure.
3) The wind pressure of the whole tower increases that can cause
twisting / tearing of the tower membrane.
4) The damage of the lightning arrestor increases on Antenna and ODU.
5) Installing and orientation of the Antenna becomes more difficult.
6) The IF cable, waveguides and grounding cables were exposed to
greater wind pressure and vibration that could result to the
disconnection and lose of the connectors.

EXAMPLE OF INSTALLATION WORKS

Dish installation is OK, but not the

case for side strut (support rod)

Offset issue with the Dish, thats

why support rod can not be installed
properly.

EXAMPLE OF INSTALLATION WORKS

Offset issue with the Dish, thats

why support rod can not be installed
properly.

Because of the wrong offset of the

antenna, side strut is installed at 45
degrees, which is not OK.

SOLUTIONS

Effects of Wrong Installation:

1)

Antenna is far from the tower.

Solution 1:

2)

More prone to tearing of mounting pole

due to wind pressure.

3)

Mounting of side strut is impossible to

attain.

4)

The IF cables, waveguide and grounding

cable are exposed for greater wind
pressure and vibration.

Antenna mounted in the

adjacent Tower leg.
Without changing the
offset of the antenna.
Antenna side strut can
be
mounted
within
standard.

CONCLUSION

By following the proper installation of the side strut and the right
offset, the risk of deforming, misaligning the antennas and traffic
outages will be minimized and be prevented in times of severe /
harsh weather condition.
Always keep in mind to mount the side strut in parallel to antenna
direction for maximum stability. And if this can not be achieved, a
deviation angle from its parallel position must be not more than 25 o
in any direction.
