Childhood Years in Calamba

Jose Rizal had many

beautiful memories of
childhood in his native
town
He grew up in a happy
home, ruled by good
parents and sanctified
by Gods blessings
Rizal loved Calamba
with all his heart and
soul
When he was 15 years
old and was a student
of Ateneo de Manila, he
wrote a poem Un
Recuerdo A Mi Pueblo
(In Memory of My Town)

Rizal was a frail,

sickly, and undersized
child, so, he was given
the tenderest care by
is parents and was in
happy days in their
garden
Another childhood
memory was the daily
Angelus prayer
The many tales told by
his aya(yaya, like
asuang, tigbalang,
nuno, made Rizal
interested in legends
and folklore

The Heros First Sorrow

- The Rizal children were
bound together by ties of
love and companionship
- Of his sisters, Jose loved
most the little Concha
(Concepcion)
- Unfortunately, Concha
died of sickness in 1865
and Jose cried bitterly at
losing her
- When I was four years
old, I lost my little sister
Concha, and then for the
first time I shed tears
caused by love and
grief

Devoted Son of the Church

- Rizal grew up a good Catholic
- At the age of 3, he began to
take part in the family
prayers
- His mother taught him the
Catholic prayers
- At the age of 5, he was able
to read the Spanish family
Bible
- One of the men he respected
during his boyhood was Fr.
Leoncio Lopez, the town
priest
- He used to visit this learned
Filipino priest and listen to
his opinions on current
events

First Poem of Rizal

- Aside from his
sketching and
sculpturing talent, Rizal
possessed a God-given
gift for literature
- His mother, who was a
lover of literature,
noticed his poetic
inclination and
encouraged him to
write poetry
- At the age of 8, Rizal
wrote his first poem
Sa Aking Mga
Kababata

- The poem reveals

Rizals earliest
nationalist
sentiment
- In poetic verses, he
proudly proclaimed
that people who
truly love their
native language will
surely strive for
liberty
- And that Tagalog is
the equal of Latin,
English, Spanish and
other languages

Sa Aking Mga
Kababata
ni Jos Rizal
Kapagka ang baya'y
sadyang umiibig
Sa kanyang salitang
kaloob ng langit,
Sanglang kalayaan
nasa ring masapit
Katulad ng ibong
nasa himpapawid.

Pagka't ang salita'y

isang kahatulan
Sa bayan, sa nayo't mga
kaharian,
At ang isang tao'y
katulad, kabagay
Ng alin mang likha
noong kalayaan.

Ang hindi magmahal sa

kanyang salita
Mahigit sa hayop at
malansang isda,
Kaya ang marapat
pagyamaning kusa
Na tulad sa inang tunay
na nagpala.

Ang wikang Tagalog

tulad din sa Latin
Sa Ingles, Kastila at
salitang anghel,
Sapagka't ang Poong
maalam tumingin
Ang siyang naggawad,
nagbigay sa atin.

Ang salita nati'y huwad

din sa iba
Na may alfabeto at
sariling letra,
Na kaya nawala'y
dinatnan ng sigwa
Ang lunday sa lawa
noong dakong una.

Influences on the
Heros Boyhood
- On the night Jose Rizal
was born, other
children were born all
over the Philippines
- But why is that out of
all these children, only
one boy-Jose Rizal- rose
to fame and greatness?
- It is because of the
influences he
experienced from
childhood up to his
death

1. Hereditary
Influence
-. Inherent qualities
which a person
inherits from his
ancestors and
parents
-. From his Malayan
ancestors, Rizal
inherited his love
for freedom, his
innate desire to
travel and his
indomitable
(determined)
courage

- From his Chinese

ancestors, Rizal
derived his serious
nature, frugality
(thrift), patience,
and love for
children
- From his Spanish
ancestors, Rizal
got his elegance of
bearing (posture),
sensitivity to
insult, and
gallantry (gentility)
to ladies

- From his father,

Rizal develop a
profound (deep)
sense of selfrespect, the love for
work, and the habit
of independent
thinking
- From his mother,
Rizal inherited his
religious nature,
the spirit of selfsacrifice, and the
passion for arts and
literature

2. Environmental
Influence
- According to
psychologists,
environment as well
as heredity, affects
the nature of a person
- Environmental
influences includes
places, associates and
events
- The scenic beauties of
Calamba and the
garden of Rizal family
stimulated the inborn
artistic and literary
talents of Jose

- The religious
atmosphere at his
home fortified
(motivated) his
religious nature
- Paciano instilled in
his mind the love for
freedom and justice
- From his sisters, he
learned to be
courteous ang kind
to women
- The fairy tales told
by his aya awakened
his interest in
folklore ang legends

- His three uncles,

brothers of his mother,
also exerted a good
influence on him
- His Tio Jose Alberto
inspired him to develop
his artistic ability, his
Tio Manuel encouraged
him to develop his frail
body by means of
physical exercises, and
Tio Gregorio intensified
his voracious reading of
good books
- Fr. Leoncio Lopez
fostered Joses love for
scholarship and
intellectual honesty

- The sorrows in his

family, such as the
death of Concha in
1865 and the
imprisonment of his
mother in 1871-74,
contributed to
strengthen his
character
- The Spanish abuses
which he witnessed
during his boyhood
awakened his spirit
of nationalism and
patriotism

3. Aid of Divine Providence

- Greater that heredity and
environment in the life of
man is the aid of Divine
Providence
- A person may have
everything in life wealth,
brains and power but
without the aid of Divine
Providence, he cannot attain
greatness and he is useless
- Rizal was providentially
destined to be the pride and
glory of his nation
- God endowed him with
versatile gifts of a genius,
which he used for the love
of his country
